No good temporary solution. I've tried vinyl repair kits on small tears, but once the top moves it'll go back to the way it was.

even duct tape won't stick unless MAYBE if taped from the inside of the top unless its really good tape. You can try some vulcanizing rubber stuff and make a giant tire patch for the top but thats just getting more expensive.

Think boat cover patch...

Alternative is hot-glue and "canvas" patch. Preheat roof and patch with hair dryer.

I've tried patch-work with pieces of vinyl (I've still got a 3 foot roll of it actually), but it always ripped again.

Black Gorilla tape worked well for me - for well over a year. Sure it needs replacing and did not hold up well to being flexed when the top was put down then back up, but it handled rain just fine. Needs replaced after a season. I recommend pieces no longer than a foot in length and layered well. Maybe you need to clean off any vinyl polish / shine before using the tape and that's what's causing it to fall off so quickly? Like I said, I really had good luck with it.

You may also want to check Walmart. I remember spotting some heavy duty, made for outdoor-use black tape that I could never find at Home Depot or Lowes - of course it was after I replaced my top.

if you tape it from both sides it will hold, I had tape on my top for a few months like that before replacing the top.

i dont think you should run it up and down, just leave it alone.
Whatever tape I used I ended up covering it with black stripe tape, dont remember if it was duct tape or shrinkwrap tape, but I do remember covering it with black tape after
