The vert seats belts are not interchangable with a coupe.

The mounting angle is different for the retractor, and the upper seat belt mount is much larger and the clip retainer is in a different place (being that the vert seat belts are shorter).

A S5 vert belt should work fine (other than color) in a 88.

on a similar subject, is there any safety concern with swapping manual seatbelts into a car which previously had automatic belts (S4 belts into S5) ??

No. They should bolt right in. The Canadian S5 cars did not get them (but still got the extra weight from the structual changes required by mouse belts).

The only concern is that it is technically illegal by federal law to modify a SRS system.

being another idiot kid on a message forum, i'll say that the legality is not a concern. i'm not a fan of electric belts. i never have been.
i knew the canadian S5s got manual belts, but i'll just play it safe and find an S4. i dont want to deal with shipping through the border and canadian FCs cant be too common in the states. especially in texas.
thanks for the reply, as always.

You should be able to order the Black S5 coupe belts (non mouse style) from your local Mazda dealer in the USA.

Remember, you probably don't want to reuse a 12-16 year old seat belt.

what do you mean "reuse"? how is it different than people with 12-16+ year old cars with the same factory seatbelts? i'm not looking for cars which have been in wrecks. in fact, that is purposely being avoided.

Yeah, I meant that most of the RX-7 s in junk yards are wrecks, and you don't want to re-use a belt that was in an accident.

are you kidding? i accused this man of being a bot sent by mazda to teach. you'd nearly think he could build every year, every country rx7 in his head. piece by piece.

If you have a problem with your seatbelts, just go to the dealership, they have a LIFETIME warantee on seatbelts in our cars, and all cars they make, I think. It's on aaroncakes website, under buying a used 2gen, I'm just too lazy to find and post it's address
