VDI Actuating
Anyone with a 1989+ even messed with the VDI?
I'd like it to switch over a little sooner- there is a big surge when it opens at 5500. How is it actuated? Air pump? I have removed the cats, and am removing the 6 port sleeves, If I remove the AP, can the VDI stilll be functional? ANyone wired it open? ANy noticible loss of low end torque? (of which I currently have none; ported engine, intake manifold!)
Thanks!

You need your Airpump and ACV in place for it to function just like you 6-ports. You can always wire it open, much like the 6-ports it will hurt your low-end a bit to do this, but its up to you whether its worth it or not. It was for me. Plus removing the airpump will get rid of a pulley and give you a little more free HP to the rear-wheels so its a tradeoff.
