So when should we expect to be captivated by the finished hood?

Next week sometime. The hood will be functional tonight to facilitate tuning, there is event tomarrow that Jarrett will be driving the car at so I won't be able to do the finish work until next week. We focused on driving it last night to ensure that there are no mechanical issues to address at the last minuet.

so, your radiator fans blow directly on your IC??

why not flip the fans to the other side...with a different angle of the rad. of course

Well,

After hours of tuning, this is my report...

Intake temps without the alchy are about 9 degrees above ambient. Coolant temps NEVER exceed 205 (fan turn on), and while at speed they are at around 183-184.

Turbo spools quite nicely, and i have just discovered that 255 tires in the rear can not handle this kind of power. 1st and second are pretty much useless now...

What fun!

I DEMAND dyno numbers + videos. You cannot ignore this demand, as if you do not make it happen, I will....cry.

If you are really interested in this type of thing for your car, my suggestion to you is to go find a chasis or race car fabricating company local to you. The labor alone will probably be close to double what the car is worth on the open market. Labor prices will vary depending on local as well, if you were close to New York city you could expect to pay upwards of $130/hr.... here in Tucson most fabricators are charging less than $75/hr and in Pheonix I would expect prices to be in the $100/hr range.

Okay all, sorry for not posting up, but I had a drift event to go to this weekend, so we were preparing.

Results and issues:

1. Spool and boost are amazing... Cant put it any other way. The car is probably making well over 400 hp, and thats just on about 12 PSI. Its just awesome... Oh, and remember this is STILL a stock motor.

2. Driving temps are rock solid. 100 degree days and my coolant temps are in the 180-195 area. Fans never turn on.

3. Idling.. Looks like the fans I selected arent quite going to cut it. Not using enough of the radiator area to bring temps down as fast as I would have hoped, so I am going to have to scrap that setup and find something else. This isnt a function of the design of the setup, its just simply lots of air, over too little area on the rad.

4. Hood: After hacking up the TII hood, I am starting to think an N/A hood would have served as a better base for the IC outlet. I think Ryan agrees, and did what he could because I didnt want to scrap the TII hood. Not a major issue.

This took us a LOT of time, over some REALLY LONG weekends. I would do it again, but its been a learning experience, and it was not cheap. I recommend that anyone contemplating this kind of work have money, time, and a really good friend thats a genius with a welder. Having this done by a shop would have been so expensive I dont even want to think about it.....

Thanks:

Ryan (of course), who put in countless hours welding in the Tucson heat. This project wouldnt even have happened if he wasnt there to plan it, build it, and then beat the ground up with a large peice of angle iron when the hood started being difficult. He is a friend, a rotary nut, and quite possibly a little bit crazy in the head.

Trevor, who pushed us along when things got frustrating. Projects like this can get a little difficult at times, and its nice to have someone there who has that motivation to make things happen. Also he is my tuner. And when this bitch makes the 400 HP on the dyno with stock internals, he will be in the limelight. His abilities are almost preternatural.

So there it is... What a crazy project. A bit stressful, a bit fun, a bit of everything.

Oh, and there is nothing like a 40mm externally wastegated rotary to wake up everyone withing a square mile!

Why didn't you tilt the radiator back instead of laying it flat like an H? mount setup?

Its a good looking job. Props to your welder. I'm gonna go with a different intercooler that I think will be set up for my needs. I won't drop it just yet. But when I do its gonna blow up like the 4th of july. The only difference in my set up and yours will be money. I'm gonna attempt the budget V-mount setup. Some will laugh when I say I want to keep it under $500. But I'll use heat wrapped steel piping for one aspect and the most expensive part will be the fans. All in all you're an inspiration. Good job and hope all goes well.

ok a personal question you don't have to answer if you don't want. How much did the project cost you in total. Give or take.

congradulations on the stupid rediculous numbers

What for? Should I get an EGT too? Nah. Too many gauges. If my coolant temps are running low, then it stands to reason that the oil temps are too.

thats not that bad of a price at all! Also I don't think you are correct about your coolant and oil temps jiving because I have very cool water temps however my oil is getting to about 230* so being that oil is the second most important thing that keeps your rotary happy I would suggest getting it!

Considering how important oil cooling is to the engine and supposedly more than 30 percent of the cooling comes from oil...i would say it is important

hay j-rat wat size belt did you use on the power steer? did you have to slot the holes on the power steer bracket to rotate the p/s pump as a tensioner or how else did you tension the belt?

Well, thats all a matter of opinion I suppose, but IIRC, full lift on the stock thermostat isnt intil like 204 or something anyways.

Okay, but considering my front most air exchanger is the oil cooler, and that Mazda never saw fit to install an oil temp gauge, I dont see why I absolutely HAVE to have one. Maybe I am being hardnosed, but thats how I run the car. Sans oil temp gauge.

Again, thank you, but the credit goes to Ryan, not me. I just opened the wallet... And I am running a 40mm external gate. It tends to scare people!

The belt was just put on by brute force. I can get you the size if you like.
