What do the acronyms mean that get thrown around here (the ones to describe cars) i.e. fc3s... i've seen it used enough to know what people are talking about, but i can't figure out waht it is, and people talk about FDs, GTUs and such, what does it mean, stimpy!??

fc3s is a 2nd gen ('86-'92)
FD is a 3rd gen
GTUs is the rarest 2nd gen

how's that?

The Vin #'s. The 2nd gens' begin with FC3. the 3rds begn with FD3. It SHOULD be FC3's not FC3S, seeing as my 2nd gen is a coupe, and has the FC33 Vin.. but oh well..

Simple answer, it relates to the VIN #

you have a NA which is just base model, you have a GTU, GXL and a TII it goes NA, GXL, GTU, TII. TII is the best 2nd gen you can get. like liquid stated its all in the VIN # if you have a 2nd gen look at your Vin# and you will see what we mean.

Wrong, The NA is not the base model. NA stands for Normally aspirated. That is any car that is not turbo. If its not a TII and han't gone through a conversion or has a supercharger it is NA.

I think you need to leave this one as a one of the great automotive mysteries!
As said, the VIN is the source of the FC tag. Generally FC3S means coupe and FC3C means convertible. As for what the letters actually stand for, they probably don't actually stand for anything and their origins are lost deep in the Mazda engineering department.
Same deal with the model designations. These tags usually mean absolutely nothing, but are dreamt up by the marketing department to differentiate the cheap models from the top-of-the-line ones, while still making the cheap one sound so impressive you'll wanna buy it! The GT initials have been turned by car makers from the original Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) meaning to "anything we think is even remotely sporty", and then had extra letters like R for race added for more showroom punch.
As a bit of non-RX-7 trivia, GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato (Grand Touring Homologation) and GTA stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita (Grand Touring Lightened) .

IIRC, The GT specifications are as follows:

GTU: Grand Touring Under (3.0 liters) US GTx naming - RX-7 trim level
GTO: Gran Turismo Omologato (Grand Touring Accredited) (Grand Touring Option - trim level of Pontiacs)
GTA: Gran Turismo Americano (Grand Touring American)
GTS: Gran Turismo Sotto (Grand Touring Under 3.0 liters) Italian GTx naming

Keeping up with them is quite confusing, and trying to locate documentation on the definition of the GTx naming conventions to double check myself is rather difficult. I haven't found a good source of information about all of the different classes yet.

This is what all the Japan enthusiasts call them - FC3S.&nbsp Period, that's all that matters..

The VIN breaks down to "FC3" = model type and "3" at the end is for "3-window coupe".

Best? Fastest for sure.
What about reliability VS a N/A?
What about a convertible for pleasure?
Best is pretty subjective!

BPU = Basic Performance Upgrades

Intake, Exhaust, Etc. Nothing major, mostly bolt-on.

I think these are simply American-use versions. Omologato is Italian for homologation, and the Alleggerita tag was used a long time before Americano!

Actually, Omologato is Italian for Accredited.

Maybe you're thinking of omologazione. That's Italian for homologation.

Either way, they both are along the same lines. Homologation is to approve something and Accredited is to authorize something.

Like I said earlier, I'm going off of stuff crammed in my head and I haven't found an official list of definitions for the GT terms.
