using 88 parts in an 89 engine....
my oil seals are gone in my 89 gtu. i have bearly any money right now so im looking for cheap alternatives. theres no way i can afford a full rebuild kit, nor could i fund a reman engine. so heres my idea. i found an 88 engine at the junk yard w/ low miles for $300. ive got an 89, so i want to keep all the advantages i have in my motor (light rotors, ect.) so what im thinkin is using all the seals from that motor (but getting all new springs for them) and using the housings from it too, and use that in my 89. what do u think? that way i can port it too...

have you dissassembled your 89 motor yet? if the front or rear housing is bad then you cannot just switch it for an 88 housing. the spark timing is different(the spark plug holes dont line up). as far as the oil seals go, im almost positive they are the same, but hear from someone else too. i dont think that you would be able to re-use a lot of the gaskets either, so you would need to buy a set. Im not sure on the front, middle and rear end plates, but at least you'll have a set to practice porting either way.
If your going to take the time and effort to do a project like that you should really do it right and get at least new apex seals.
Hope this helps a little and good luck

i have been told that,on the rotor housings of the different years, while the trailing plug is in a slightly different location, the leading plugs are the same.and,to the best of my knowlage, the trailing plugs are there more for emmisions then anything else...but,like i mentioned, this is 2nd hand info.
