Upgrading a TII - the right way!
Hello All,
I've got an 89 TII, low miles, and fantastic condition. Right now, the car is completely stock. I've decided that i'd like to upgrade the car's performance, and i'm hoping that the experts out there will help me determine the best way to do this.
Here's the deal. The car has already had all the basic maintenance work completed (new tires, brakes, etc.) I'm prepared to spend around $2500 total on the car - not all of it has to be spent at once. I'd like to create a well balanced car that is more interesting to drive than your average TII - I don't see myself autocrossing it or taking it to the drag strip. Given these parameters, what types of upgrades would you do?
P.S. - Yes, I have used the search button, but I haven't yet come across the information i'm looking for.
Thanks,
Rev

Thats excellent that you have all maintanence done first. Well, exhaust is the number one restriction on the turboIIs. That and a FCD (fuel cut defencer) should be your first priority. I'm tellin you, you will notice an immediate change in the performance of the car. An upgraded clutch would also be a wise choice, and while your at it if you decide to do so, a lightened flywheel. Now, lets address the intake. You have a couple of options here. You can either 1.) Replace the stock filter with a free-flowing one 2.) Remove the box and place a cone filter on the end of your mass air flow sensor.
With these mods I also highly recommend an upgraded fuel pump for your car. These mods should keep you busy. I recommend doing them one at a time and seeing how your 7 reacts to each one before continuing to the next modification. After all, you may just do the exhaust and realize that was all the performance gain you needed.

Definantly go with suspension and ride quailty first. Then exhaust, get a Turbo Flo system from rx7.com and a cat-back of choice. If u want it legal though get a downpipe and midpipe. These can all be found at rx7.com. The FCD and fuel pump are a must, and also rewire your new fuel pump. Add and intake, new clutch, flywheel, short throw and you will have a pretty damn nice car. Oh and get a Aftermarket Boost Gauge when u buy your first performance upgrade.

Thanks for the feedback. A few quick questions:
1) What type of exhaust would you recommend? I'd prefer not to wake up my neighbors everytime I leave the house. I've heard good things about Racing Beat exhaust. Comments?
2) A couple of people mentioned suspension mods. Any recommendations on specific parts?
Thanks,
Rev

as far as the racing beat exhuast, my friend had it and it sounded good....it was'nt rice loud, and at idle it sounds good......then when you get on it , it sounds even better, ......and i think its slated for an increase of 49 or 59 HP which is enough to be noticable increase......
thats what i would recommend.....but im no guru by anymeans......
thats the exhaust im gonna get though......as soon as my car is actually running again!

i would also recommend the racing beat exhaust. it is the quitest and makes the most power. as far as suspension. start with getting a urethane suspension bushing kit. some of them are a pain to install but the difference is phenomenal.as far as springs and shocks i reccomend eibach but you can choose what you like
