Unused bolt holes?

There are 2 bolt holes on the top of each rotor housing. One set is for the vacuum hose assembly...what the heck are the others for?? Also, there are 2 holes on the sloped part of the intermediate housing...what goes there?

Pics by chance? It's easy to speculate, but with pics you can be more sure.

I didn't have time to snap a pic of my engine, but here's a 'generic' housing showing the 2 holes at the top. The rightmost is where the vacuum assembly screws in on each housing. The other holes seem to have had screws in them because the threads are clean.

I can't find a good pic of the intermediate housing, but this pic kind of shows the flat sloped top. There are 2 screw holes in there too.

I feel like I'm really missing something obvious here, but I just can't think of what! Everything seems to be accounted for.

Two bolt holes on the rotor housing...
For turbo motors, one is for the vacuum, metal pipe mess - the other is for the intercooler bracket.

Bolt holes on the center iron?
Looks like the NA EGR valve?

Actually, I could have sworn I had replied earlier in the day! I completely believed you...especially after looking at some pics of EGR valves. I just wish I knew why there are bolts in both sets of holes on the rotor housings of my old engine! Ending up with extra parts always scares me

It seems Mazda's quality control isn't that great.
You see weird stuff like drilled and tapped holes like that, which are totally unnecessary...but it's there. :P

Actually, their quality control is excellent in this regard. If not for their insistance on continuing to provide threaded 8 x 1.25mm holes for backwards compatability, a lot of our options for aftermarket things like oil filter pedestals would be limited.

The boss on the rear rotor housing is for the grounds for the ECU. They are on a *ring*terminal.
