Unhappy Universal joints

I'm under the car reinstalling the starter, after I reinstalled the new motor. I look up at the drive shaft, and I see the ears of the propeller shaft and the drive shaft touching like theres no universal joint there! Mazda says the drive shaft is an assembly PN#m060-25-100c.
Are the U-joints welded in?
Why can't I just replace them, not the whole unit?
Why is my car falling apart? (because you bought it for $800 dumb ***)

Yea I just had to replace my whole driveshaft because one of my ujoints was shot... the ujoints and the shaft are welded together (thanks mazda) and a new shaft from mazdatrix is 200+ and the ujoints are like 20 each..
find a used one or go to the junkyard
