unique sound from front left tire area.

Hey everyone,

Driving down the highway 4 or 5 days ago, i was driving beside a concrete median and i could hear the echo of my car very clearly. I heard something a little out of the ordinary coming from the front left tire area, it sounded almost exactly like when you have a pebble stuck in the tread of your tire... but it wasn't consistant.

This sound is eratic, 4 days ago when i first heard it the sounds were not connected.. now the sound i hear is mostly sounds off seperatly, but is occasionally connected..

imagine holding a handfull of small rocks or pebbles, and dropping them onto concrete... thats what the sound is like.. but i have checked the tread for nails, rocks, etc etc.. i would have figured if it was a rock it would have shot out by now.. but the sound continues..

The sound is not loud.. the driver could only notice it if you knew your car..

the sounds happen faster at high speeds, and slower and slower speeds, but are not sounding off when at a idle..

HELP!

im stuc for ideas, and i cannot get it up on a hoist.

thanks alot
cam

i dont know if this makes any sence to you.. is hard to describe..

could just be gravel on the side of the road that you're running over. You might not hear it from the back tire since you're moving and the sound coming foward would be quieter and lower pitch it would blend in with road noise.

Can't think of anything else that would cause that sound that you wouldn't notice in other ways.

Something to test, get someone in the passenger seat and have them stick their head out the window through a tunnel. If they hear it on the right too it could just be your tires normal sounds that you aren't used to hearing.

It could be the noise of the tire going over expansion joints in the road.

One thing I'd check is the front wheel bearings. There's an article on one of the sites (fc3s.org?) that describes checking & tightening them. Put the car up on a jack (just one corner) and yank on the wheel. If you can feel/hear the wheel move in/out on the hub, you need to tighten the wheel bearings.

could be brake related too...I've had the same problem for a while.

TEST: drive by the concrete median and apply the brakes...see if the sound goes away. If so, at least you know what part of the front spindle assembly the sound is coming from.
