I assume you are referring to the rotor bearings. Typically you would not need to replace these unless you can see obvious indentations, scratches, they are out-of-round, and so on. From what I have read on the forum so far, it seems that the stock bearings are pretty robust. They should handle without problems a stock to decently modified car.

Where you start needing to worry is if the car has been beaten on really bad, had a lot drag racing, or oil starvation. These can cause the bearings to wear out faster.

If I am not mistaken you can upgrade the bearings if you are constantly running the engine at high RPMs (bridgeport). Right off-hand I know there are some on www.mazdatrix.com

Hope this helps.

EDIT: There are some rebuild kits that include them such as Kit C from Atkins, so if you have the tools and time to press them in, go for it.

95% of the time, rotary bearings come out looking nearly like-new. You shouldnt have to replace them.

Usually a pilot bearing comes with a clutch kit, not an engine rebuild kit. He is referring to the rotor bearings for the engine.
