Twirling Shifter!

Does anyone know exactly what it means when your entire shifter can turn around in circles repetedly... and what it would take to fix? It's annoying to all of a suden notice that your shifter as turned a 360 degree turn and feels realy funny too.

You sure its the whole shifter and not just the ****?

Cause for the entire shifter to turn, it would either have to be unbolted from the tranny, or the shifter arm would have had to somehow broken off of the mount and be free within that.

Pull up the rubber boots around the shifter, and check to make sure there are 3 bolts holding it tight to the tranny below.

I did change my shifter bushings latly, maby I forgot to attach those bolts again... but assuming those bolts are still there, what else could be wrong? Someone once told me that I might ahve to drop my transmission to fix this.

I see no reason you would have to do that. You can reach it just fine with the tranny in place.

But while you are replacing your transmission that ran dry cause you left the speedo cable out, you can fix this

When you installed the bushings for the shifter, did you line the slot in the shifter up with the pin in the transmission? It's at the front, and that pin has to engage to prevent this and for it to really shift properly.

yea, if the pin the pivot ball on the shifter rides in some how breaks off or is not lined up, im sure the shifter would be able to spin around freely like you discribe.

There is a rubber isolation layer between the lower shifter and upper shifter shaft (the part that the **** screws onto). I bet that the upper shafter shaft has broken free of the rubberised isolation layer that is between the lower shifter and the handle.

Unless there is a short shift kit or he has a broken guide rod on the tranny's shifter hole, I doubt he could have installed the shift **** assembly without lineing it up. To top that off the inner boot would have to be all torn up to allow the whole assembly to rotate.

The pin is not on the shifter, it is on the inside of the housing where the shifter goes in- about halfway up between the 2 bushings. You have to angle the lower bushing in to get it under this pin. It fits into a slot in the front side of the "bulge" that the 2 plastic bushings fit around on the shifter. If this is missing you would probably have to replace the whole shifter housing/shift rod on top of the tailshaft housing to fix it.
