TV mounted inside the idiot light area
TV mounted inside the idiot light area
I got borred a while ago and decided to cut into my car. I took out the idiot light plastic surround and used a dremel to cut away a good portion of the plastic underneath and then just the top of the air duct under that...it is manual flip up but it works...was a lot of work..and i put in a PS2 for the DVD and play action

Yeah, right. I'm going to give my personal information and email address so I can look at some pictures? Seriously, when did ImageStation begin sucking?

i have no objection to screens (i'm not going to get into the overuse of them). i would love one. anyone can say what they want, but i would love an in-dash dvd player. take Family Guy and Futurama on a nice long road trip. i'd also like a laptop with wireless internet and/or an in-car-computer with harddrive for mp3s and such. say what you will about how unsafe it can be, but sometimes listening is funny enough. that and i will take my road trips overnight. and if you have a co-pilot, it gives them something to do. maybe i'm just a bit of a tech-hybrid junkie.
That's a relativly good place to mount the TV, however like someone stated before you should really have the warning/clock function still attached somewhere in the vehicle. Maybe molded or mounted below the radio?
good work, any close ups of the mounting area?

the idiot light cluster is where it was and they work just fine..the TV flips up and down....so I see the lights just fine...and its not like i use the tv everytime i drive..only when i travel or trafic..ugh...when it flips down, no one can tell there is a TV there...i will take some pics this weekend...don't feel like taking the cover off right now ...too lazy
Hey Travelintrevor! I'm doing something in the same area. Removed the idiot light surround, cut out the plastic beneath it to put in an "Extigy" audio processor for 5.1 surround out of my PDA, aux input for anything, MIDI from my laptop, SPDIF, blah, blah, blah. I have yet to figure out how to steal an inch from the heater box and keep the vent motors but I will find a way. When its all done it won't be noticable and will pop up from under a hinged idiot surround for access. Pics when I'm done.
Yes MIDI(Musical Instrumnet Digital Interface). Of course with a sig like "CASIO" you would know all about it. C'mon fess up, you know you've got some sort of MIDI rig. Tell the truth. Haven't you ever wanted to be able to play MIDI files/instruments(especially one of your own) in your car? How about this? I've been a MIDI nut from the beginning and yes I have a Yamaha SHS-101. And yes, I will be plugging it into my FC and playing my brains out in my FC along with the sequenced files in my laptop. I've done it on long plane trips and had a wonderful time. C'mon Casio you too can do this for less than a hundred bucks.
haha, wowsa ! i, too, am obsessed with sound. making sounds, creating, tweaking, destroying; whatever can be done.
i, unfortunately, have to midi rig. what i have wnated to do was have an rca input so i could jam through the car stereo. midi is beyond me as far as the 'brains' of it are concerned. in fact, i've never used it. crazy, huh? (i have two 1200s and a vestax 07, though
).
i have a dr-110 for sale (drum machine from 1983), dr202, and an Ensoniq ASR-X (needs work) all for sale. i want an MPC or Roland's new MV 8000 (i think that name's right).
have we threadjacked yet?
well tell me how to do this. i am curious of your setup. i dont even know how midi to computers works. i believe through usb (like those Oxygen keyboards), but i'm not sure.

OK. Sorry for the threadjacking. Check out the Soundblaster Extigy box. They're easily found on the auction sites for cheap and are the quick and dirty way to get into MIDI. Also, if you like gaming, this little box can take the audio out of any machine and turn it into surround sound. MIDI is really a simple device protocol and is plug and play until you get into the exotic stuff. My mobile setup is very simple, the only MIDI is in the Extigy box which is portable. PM me here and we can return this thread to its rightful owners. (I could use MIDI to trigger samples or wav files of uncapped monster rotaries, or turbine engines. Hmmmm......)
im planning on putting a 10" touch screen in there somewhere, mounting a computer in there have the screen as my display for it. have a windows desktop, winamp, movies.... counter strike lol... ect.
im still working out he placement for it all.. but using the sloid carbon fiber stereo surround means i can do it how ever i want. I want to mount my lights cluster down in the surround with the other stuff... and make a fiberglass mount for either some gauges... or maybe even my safc where the lights used to be.

there are several places you coudl put a touchscreen....you could do a flip down from the ceiling of he car(as long as it is not a convertible)..another great place would be the glove compartment...you could either mount it on the front(flush mount) or do a custom install so that when you open the glove box it woudl pull out from a horizontal position to a vertical position.... no one would know you have anything unless the screen was out...the only things you can see when looking inot my car are the gauges and turbo timer....everything else is hidden...check out this link
