turning to some advice

heres the story:

1991 Rx-7
-143k miles

The car had clogged cats and we removed them and had an exhaust shop fab up a straight pipe w/ the exhaust return line. It did well for a while and really opened up the car and it didn't have the strain on the motor anymore.

The car was also an automatic. We recently just completed the auto to 5-speed
swap and it went very well. It started right up and ran fine for about a week. After that week or so, I started noticing hot start problems. It wouldn't start up after it got to temp and I had to have it push started at times. Pulling the fuel pump relay seemed to work for a while. Then it started to get worse.

We installed a fuel cutoff switch to see if that would cure it for the time being and ran seafoam in the gas tank and through the brake master cylinder vacuum line. After that it seemed to not help. I took my battery out b/c when we would jump it off (more juice) it wouldn't hesitate to fire up. I had the battery tested and it was a bad battery. I bought a new one (the best available w/ most cold crank amps) and it didn't help.

my only guesses are:
-leaky injectors (could removing them and cleaning them help?)
-starter (not sure but is it possible for it to turn too slow)
-plug wires? (i have fairly new plugs in it)
-and finally a rebuild as I understand that my 143k mile motor isn't making that grand of compression. but it seems to run fine when it is started up and pulls pretty decent.

sorry to turn to a thread b/c I know there are a million. but I'm stumped for now. Thanks.

-Allen

Do a proper compression test before you do anything else. No sense looking for a non-existent peripheral problem if the engine compression is sub-par.

ok cool. just curious... the mazda dealership is asking $80 for a compression test. but im still questioning the thought of them having any knowledge of Rx-7's at all. lol. i dont really have or have access to a mazda specific tester so i think ill mosey on over to the rotary shop like an hour 1/2 away.
