Unhappy Turn signals and hazard light not working

Hi Rotor Wisers,

I'm a newbie here, so please excuse me if this question seems to be long and stupid.

I'm from Australia and I just bought a 1988 RX7 turbo one month ago. Everything works ok besides that sometimes the turn signals (both right and left) and hazard light don't blink at all. They came on but didn't blink. So, I took the car to a workshop two weeks ago and they said it's probably got a faulty relay flash unit. But then they found out that the relay unit is incoporated in the ECU? which would cost about AUS$1000 (US$500) to replace the whole thing, so they did some temporary fix (free of charge), and it worked for about a week. About three days ago, the turn signals and hazard light just wouldn't come on at all.

I am just wondering what would be the real cause of the problem and is it true that we couldn't just simply replace the relay unit? It would be very much appreciated if anyone could take me through the steps for trouble-shooting this problem!

Don't know if they are related problems, sometimes when I press the gas pedal, all the lights (dash lights, head lights and stop lights) start to blink very quickly. Would this be a bad grounding problem?

Thank you very much in advance for your helps and suggestions!

Check the hazard fuse. It probably blew fromwhatever they did. A new ECU would not be a hard thing to get ahold of secondhand or replace. I would suggest you do that before dropping 1000 on a garage.

it's probably not a fuse, it happens to alot of rx7s, could be a bad switch or computer. icemark, is defently a good resource for these things. He repairs then for a very fair price.

It's the *CPU* which is located behind the driver's side kick panel. You'll either need to repair cold solder joints (instructions @ Teamfc3s.com- Tech articles) or find a replacement.

If he's an aussie, it's going to be where the pass would sit...

resoldering your cpu is generally a good thing to do, but first replace the light cluster switch and turn singal switch, ill put money on that being your problem

NO, THAT IS THE WORNG ANSWER AND A BOGUS ANSWER.

Resoldering is correct, but not replacing switches!

The problem is not related to the Light cluster switch or turn signal switch, if the hazards don't work.

The CPU is the problem is both do not work. They are no in any way related switch wise.

Ahh...thank you very much guys! Yes, I think cold solder joints in the CPU would be my problem. But I am still a bit confused why some people said it's the ECU? I thought ECU is the emission control unit which is different from the CPU? Thanks again guys!

Unhappy

Took the car to an auto-electrician last weekend, he checked and re-soldered the cpu. The lights worked for about 20 minutes, and then they would just stay on without flashing. Then after trying to switch them on and off for about one hour both the hazard light and turn signals wouldn't turn on again. We checked the cluster swithes and fuses, they are fine. So the man thinks it's something to do with the transistors on the flasher unit. Is it possible just to get a flasher unit without getting the whole cpu?

Thanks!

The CPU has 3-replaceable circuit boards, or buy a new one $124 http://www.mazdaformance.com

I'd try to snag a used one locally down there.

whatever floats your boat, though I don't see the sense in re-paying for the same part over and over
