Turboing a 1989 GTU

Hey I am new to the whole RX7 thing, and the rotary engine, and I was wondering if the stock GTU engine can handle a turbo? I have a 60 / 1 turbo, the manifold and the oil lines that came off a 1994 TT RX7. Would that turbo be "to much" for that engine? Any help would be appricated.

How best to Turbo a S5

1. Sell the GTU

2. Take that money and apply toward buying a real S5 TII.

unless your talking about turbo'ing a Vert. Then, any expense is worth it.

sell me your GTU lol :-)....it wouldnt be a bad idea to start off with a stock turboII 4 port swap, and then start to modify and upgrade from there.. ie the 60-1, and drivetrain as well.

i duno, there are advantages to using a GTU as a platform for a Base TII, but i duno if the gains justify the means...

theres a bit more involved than just throw a turbo motor and driveline and drive... other things have to be swaped and modded, its really a pain to swap a TII into NAs, but agian, check the FAQs for info... also, if you dont feel like doing it yourself theres a guy thatll do it for you, search under Kevin Landers and Rotary Resurection

IMO, Keep it an NA and just mod the suspension, youll be better off in the long run...

oh, and to anwser your question, Yes and no. Im sure theres a way to do it... but it be a bad idea, the engine would most definatly pop... 1. the NA engines are at a higher compression and turboing an NA is just a bad idea imo anyway, youd only be able to push 3-5psi anyway, and secondly, im sure that GTU engine is tired... Bad idea. even with a 2nd Gen Turbo...

This is just not true, I'm running 5 lbs on 460cc injectors / FMU / SAFC with no problems, in fact, the car runs a little too rich under boost. Aaron Cake was running 10 psi on his 6 port setup last time I looked. HOWEVER. I will say that if you like to have a running car, Just save up and buy a turbo-2. Unless you are willing to put the time and money into it, you'll end up with an empty pocket and a blown motor. Everything depends on the tuning.

Well, if you like turbo lag, keep your lower compression . Full boost at 1600 rpm is a beautiful thing....I just need a bigger turbo to keep that full boost....

I've pushed 20psi into a stock S5 NA block without exploding it, it's not all that difficult. I would say leave the thing alone.

This guy has been hit by the Turbo II lovers' NA hatin baseball stick.... j/k... lol.... In my honest opinion, I would recommend that any body and their mamma save $5-8K (depending on if you do your own work and how much stuff you mess up) to invest in a 13B-RE! I know that I have been post happy w/ the 13B-RE suggestions lately, but I just love them. The engine itself is rare... The Cosmo was manufactured from FEB-90 until SEP-95 for a total of 8875 sales. Half of which were the 13B-RE and the other half were the 3 rotor (20B.) So, the motors themselves are unique (and as of right now I havent seen anyone else in my area with this FC engine swap and I live in Ft. Lauderdale, which is not exactly a small city but rather large.

Anyway... I am gonna see if I can setup the Vert now. I have a digital camara now, so I will be posting pics this time. Later peeps.
