GA Turbo-vert questions

Hey, I am looking into doing a turbo vert swap and was curious about a few things, if someone already knows of a thread about this, sorry could you link me to it please? I have a 1991 vert manual trans.

1. If I buy a JDM turbo s5 engine, trans, harness and ECU from JDM Engines for sale, low milage, imported JDM motors by J-Spec Auto sports
will it be pretty much plug and play (I know I will have to get a t2 rear end and axles). Or do I have to find an american t2 engine (are there any differences? if so could you tell me please lol).

2.Anyone know of a good place to find a t2 engine/trans other than that website that's trust worthy.

3. Any advice? Thanks for your time!

Try to be a little lax Hozz,as this Guy only has 21 post, and it was probably hard to even get into this section!!.
Jake: try to steer away from #1.Most Jdm engines are a Crapshoot, and unless you do a compression test at their facility they are Done from the get-go.
#2: PM Japan2LA on forum here(or search him) He is a reputable Seller of Jdm Based engines But he stands behind what he sells.
He is a busy guy so be patient when waiting on a reply.
#3: you can use the N/A rear end but you need the TII to N/A conversion shaft.(driveshaft. MAZDATRIX for Mazda RX7, RX8, Rotary Engine Parts and Accessories has them). You can always complete the drivetrain with a S5 TII rear Differential and half shafts so that will withstand the extra power.
You can use the S5 N/A engine harness on the TII engine or source a TII engine harness.
I hope that helps you.
..and YES,there are Pages of threads on this very subject,so get a coffee, put on your reading goggles and have a night of just you and the Forum...alone..lol!,

It's weird that you have a manual tranny in a USDM vert. Putting a manual in the vert was the only thing that required custom fabrication.

There are a few NA to Tii swap threads in the 2nd Gen archives. RotaryResurrection has a terrific Tech section that includes NA/Tii and S4/S5 swap information. And since you are new to the site you'll also want to bookmark AaronCake's Tech section as well as RETed's Tech section.

And Styx is right. Don't buy an engine from any JDM importer other than Japan2LA unless you can personally inspect the engine and do a pressure test. Otherwise, plan on adding $1500 to whatever you pay for the engine for a rebuild.

You dont want the JDM ECU (N374) or harness. You can use the current engine harness with only a couple of small changes. You will need the Tii sensors. You'll find the details in the writeups.

And to Hozz's point search is your friend but the search tools on the site suck with enthusium. You'll get better results using Google with the string:

Code:
site:www.rx7club.com "2nd Generation Specific (1986-1992)" swap
The "2nd Gen..." appears at the top of every page in the 2nd gen section (eliminates FB and FD info). Makes life easier.

Between my father and I, we have owned 4 different verts. None of them were automatic.

That being said, turbo swapping a vert is a great upgrade. What everyone else has said is true. One other source to check for JDM engine is Corksport. They don't advertise that they sell JDM engines (and maybe they don't anymore), but many years ago someone gave me a tip about them. I did not end up purchasing from them, but I appreciated their honesty. Story goes that I waited for their next arrival of engines and they were upfront with me that they hadn't received any S5 13B worth anything but parts.

Some other things to think about especially if you are doing any aftermarket upgrades:
  1. Fuel pump: You will need to upgrade your N/A fuel pump. Easiest swap is finding a good FD fuel pump. This upgrade is needed regardless of any aftermarket upgrades to the turbo engine. The OEM turbo engine requires a different fuel pump than the N/A
  2. Fuel Injectors and control: If you go with a better breathing exhaust you will be boosting above OEM specs. That means you'll need boost control, fuel control and larger secondary fuel injectors. Rtek sells OEM ECU mods that are a cheap, easy (but maybe not the best) entry into aftermarket upgrades.

Yep... I had a Vert that I got from Ari at Rotary Performance that was a factory 5 speed too!

Funny, both verts I've seen were automatics (my boss bought hers new in 90 or 91 and the one I bought for my son's 16th). And it seems silly for Mazda to build two versions of the vert chassis given its low production numbers. And since Mazda saw fit to deny US drivers the turbo vert they provided to other markets, I'd unconsciously deduced Mazda intended the US verts for secretaries and low-testosterone males suffering mid-life crises and ED; so a heavy, pretty, NA, slushbox car was perfect for Americans! Even Ford - until 2013 - thought Americans soft and stupid by selling the good Focus to every part of the world except the US.

Good to know.

Dang, I didn't know vert 5 spd were that rare lol. So even if I use a stock s5 13b-t engine with a
free flow exhaust and a tuned ecu I will need to pump up the injector size on the trailing end?
What is the stock size and what should I go to? Also what brand? Where is a good place to pick-up a tuned ECU or do I need to send mine in?

I've chipped diesel trucks, but not flashed old ECUs before lol.

All '88 verts were manuals. The 4-speed auto wasn't even an option on the TII, GXL or vert. All '89-'91 verts had the manual transmission standard with the 4-speed auto as an option.

It's automatic verts that are less common; especially since most of them were '88s which didn't even have the option.
