Turbo Upgrades???
Hey all, i'm fairly new to the rotary so please, spare the jokes and just try to help me out. I'm looking to upgrade the turbo on my 87 t2. I'd like to upgrade to a stage 2 turbo with up to 15psi. What kind of other mods must i have done before installing a stage 2 turbo so i dont blow up my engine. Also, what does the stock turbo run for psi and what's the max the engine will handle? And one more question, how many horses at the wheel does a stock 87T2 run? Thanks.

Please read over the "FAQ for FCs" at the top of this forum. That will answer alot of questions you may have.
To help you out a little, stock S4 turbos run at about 5.5psi, and the engine makes 182HP. Its not really a question of how much boost the engine can handle, but yet what the fuel mixtures are like at the boost level you are running. With the stock fuel system, you shouldnt run over 10psi, or you will begin to run lean, which can, and will blow your engine.
What other modifications do you have done , that you are now looking at an upgraded turbo?
Here are some upgrades from BNR:

I haven't done much, like i said, i'm not too knoledgeable about this particular engine, i've done plenty of mods with piston engines but rotors are like an alien language.

well before you can run more boost you will need
a. fcd or fuel cut defence witch tricks the cpu into thinking that its only runny 5.5psi so your car won't cut off fuel to the rear rotor.
b. good strait through exhaust system
c. good intake
d. rewire your fuel pump because your wiring is old.
e. safc to tune.
f. and get a good boost gauge and a pillar gauge pod.
I think thats about it.

If you going the S-AFC route, I'd suggest bigger secondary injectors and a bigger fuel pump as well.. I also wouldn't go much over 12 PSI with an S-AFC...

Thanks for the help, i guess i should focus more attention to other performance mods first, the car has only 45,000 miles on it so the turbo "should" still have some miles left on it before it absolutly needs replacing.

The first thing is to buy a Fluke 53II digital thermometer and install one lead in the inlet duct to the intercooler and one after the intercooler. Then go boost the car to its highest boost and look at the inlet temps of the intercooler. EEEEEEEEK! Which in turn should make you think about front mount intercoolers if you still plan to boost to whatever boost you said above.. Oooops, you said no humor. Oh well, too late.

Most of the poster on the other forums will tell you to get serious HP you will need a stand alone ECU. Stock ECU is just not advance enough to take on much tunning beyond stock boost level.
That is the reason HKS stages eventually leads to AIC's and Peggy back ECU.
Prob cheaper to do a Haltech install than going thru the HKS stages.

Upgrade fuel pump
Fuel pump rewire
Might want to get your fuel injectors professionally cleaned.

Max power is 500hp at the wheels.
And one more question, how many horses at the wheel does a stock 87T2 run?

Does anyone know the type of oil outlet flange on stock turbo? Is it a T3, or possibly a T4. Hell I could be in the wrong family for all I know.

OK quick question: I have an 87 turbo also (3mm seals, stageII streetport, FCD, and turbo back with nothing but a pre-Cat w/ stock turbo) obviously im running at 5.5psi and i want to be in the 8-12 range. And i know the stock intercooler is restrictive and inefficient so i plan on a big front mount. What mods will i have to do after that????? including turbo, fuel system, tunning???
can i get away with just upgrading the fuel pump to a higher pressure, what reprogramming will i have to do to compensate for that? thanks any help will be great
im looking at the very cheapest route

Cheapest would be...
FCD
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
Fuel pump rewire
Clean fuel injectors
Next step would be AFC and large fuel injectors
