which turbo timer do you have? / why?

just wondering... for those of you with turbo timers, which did you chose? do you like it? would you have chosen something else? do you use all thee features?
do you wish it had any others?

I'm looking at the HKS (both the type-0 and type-1) greddy, and apexi turbo timers.

I have the apexi unit, I chose it because it was small. Waste of money imo, I had a lot of $$$ at the time, and made a poor decision. Turbo is water cooled, doesn't need it, plus for peace at mind I can let it idle with me in it...

the turbo doesn't need to be cooled down because its water cooled? but isn't the point to get all the burning hot oil out of the turbo so it doesn't screw it in the ******* ?

I let mine idle with me right now, but if I'm running late, I'd like to be able to just shut it off and run.

okay, so no apexi unit.

thanks.

only one person on this forum has a turbo timer?

well, I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow to order it. damn.

1Revvin7, are you saying you thought your apexi unit was a waste of money? or just turbo timers in general?
how does the apexi unit compare to the other turbo timers?

Huh? I think he meant ANY turbo timer was a waste of his money.

Anyways, I have the apex'i myself. First chose it because it is small. But I do use the voltage meter regularly. Also, it goes up to 10 minutes and is easy to adjust. Don't know what all you need from a TT though.

I bought a turbo timer from jaycar which I had to assemble myself. It was only $40 NZD ($20 USD) and the only way anyone would know its there is the kill switch on the dash (and the car running with no one in it obviously) Definatly a good buy.

Apexi: because it is the smallest one on the market

2 things I wanted my TT to have/do:
1) Time down my car
2) Be small

I don't need my TT to read boost, a/f, voltage or have it wipe my ***.

I chose the Apexi because of its small footprint. It also displays A/F, O2 volts and battery volts. I leave mine set to diplay O2 volts. A EGT is very usefull of showing you how hot your turbo is. My fovorite is here

I have an old school greddy timer. All it does it shut the car off. Straight to the point. One thing I dont like about turbo timers is that the stock alarm (if you have it) doesnt activate when the timer shuts off the car. I'm not sure if aftermarket alarm systems work any better with the timer. I found myself not using the timer very often since most of the time I sat in the car for a minute or two before turning it off. If youre going to get one, try getting a used one. That way you dont spend a crapload of money on something you wont use everyday after the first month.

wow, you guys are right the apexi is definetly tiny

I got a greddy that is a deal bigger, but so far it hasnt been in the way and I dont consider it an eye sore so I still like it

I also dont always use it (like aparanlty almost everone else) but its definetly nice to have...

I got an apexi because it was free, and I just installed it last night.

I didn't hook it up to the ecu, so no a/f ratio reading or o2 reading. I heard it was a bad reading anyways so I figured why bother messing with my ecu. Installed it in about an hour 30 or something, was a pain.. I hate being under the dash trying to ziptie wires out of the way.

yeah, I realized that after I posted

so then the apexi unit sounds like its very popular.
I'm not too worried about the size, but I would like to have the A/F ratio meter. however, some of the speed/distance time measuring functions on teh others might be nice as well... but I have no idea how accurate they are. does anyone? how do they know when a 1/4 mile, or 60mph or whatever has passed?

oh also, how do they install? there's the harness that allows you to just plug them in, but where does that go?

I have the Apex'i also. I bought it based solely on the size of the unit. All of the timers on the market basically do the same thing, shut your car off at the desired length of time. Mine is set on 30 sec, but if I've bene driving pretty hard, I'll switch it up to a minute. The timers also work great if you have to get back into your house after you have started your car and your key is on your key ring. Just set the timer to 5 minutes and run into the house and get whatever you forgot.....happens a lot to me.

I also use the timer when I'm going into 7 eleven for a drink or something and I don't want to shut my car off for just a minute or two. I set the timer to 5 minutes and lock the doors and take my keys with me....

The O2 feature is worthless so I leave mine set to the voltage so I can see how bad I need a grounding kit when my lights, wipers, and defrost are all on

I think you are confusing the turbo timers with the G-Tech units...

There are harness' available for the timers and they just plug right into the ignition harness in the vehicle. Wires for the e-brake, ground, and the O2 sensor (if you want) need to be routed, then you're good to go.

(this was the procedure on my Apex'i, I'm not familiar with the other units, they may be different)

i have the GReddy cuz its 1/4 size, very standard and easy to work with as far as installation. its easy to use. it has 2 settings, and it plays cute music when you turn it off and on.

you can set it anywhere from 0:10 to 9:99, its easy to set also, easy to toggle between the P-1 and the P-2 settings, push of a button.

I like how it works well w/ the Profec B too... if you hook it up in a Blitz DIN installation, you can stack the profec and the GReddy TT (or HKS i guess) on top of eachother and install a 60mm EGT guage. (i prefer EGT over O2 anyways)

the A'pex TT reminds me of those new fandangled cell phones w/ buttons so small, you need a pin to push them, and they are the size of a roll of dimes... arent practical at all... its just gay... it just doesnt fit well into the interior, ANYwhere... its as gay as trying to mount w/ double sided tape. its akward and funny shaped. ill pass on it, thanks.

I had the HKS TYpe-1 on my old FD, I wouldn't buy it again, it stood out too much, the screen was too bright at night, and having a silver casing with a black dash totally clashed.

besides the color and lighting problems, how was it?
I think I'd put it in my glovebox anyway. its not like I'd need to see it while I'm driving. plus, you can get a metric one in black

I've got the Greddy, don't remember why I picked it.

I've never used any of the fancy functions on the bastard, but the voltage indicator is real nice to have since there's no voltage gauge in the turbo.

Installation was very simple and it doesn't look horrible.
