Turbo Owners

Do you let your car idle for a couple minutes befor you turn it off? If you have a turbo timer how long do you let it idle? If your stopping to get gas do you turn your car off? Sorry about all the questions me and my friend were having an argument about turning your car off befor filling your gas up or to keep it on to save time an such.

I'd always let it cool for at least 30 seconds before shutdown. If doing "spirited" driving, closer to 1-1.5 minutes. I will shut it off while getting gas (most times) but will still give it the 30sec cooldown first.

If you have been driving the car somewhat hard, just let it idle for a minute before you turn it off, or longer depending on how much and how long you've been beating on it. And I would think you should always turn your car off before filling up?

I've talked to more than a few turbo experts who have said that with a water and oil cooled turbo there is no real need to let it cool down. If your turbo is oil cooled only however it's a different story.

With the stock turbo just make sure your not on boost then shut it off right away. Drive not on boost for a couple minutes before you stop and that should be more than enough.

Yes, I let my TII turbo idle for 30 sec before turning off the engine after driving in boost. Also note that off-boost driving counts for "idle" time because the turbo can be considered at idle when off boost (it isn't exactly at idle, but close enough). For example, if you were boosting while driving to work or school, and then you drove through the parking lot without boosting, the time driving through the parking lot counts for idle time so you can just shut off the engine when you find your parking place. The same would go for driving through a neighborhood without boosting, or any other driving or idleing without boosting. Make sense? Basically, don't confuse engine idle with turbo idle, as they are two different things.

It is very dangerous to fill your car with gas while the engine is running. Don't do this.

BTW, both of the above responses are based on my aviation experience with turbine engines and something called "hot refueling", which is risky, even with good grounding and controlled conditions.

True. This is why a turbo timer is a waste of money for most TII drivers. However, I do know of some people who actually drive crazy enough around town that they are boosting right up to the point where they slam on the brakes and stop the car in their parking space. In these remote cases, a turbo timer is a good idea. Keeping the brake disks from warping is another story.

it's just an expensive volt meter .

you can't walk away from the car with it running anyways or the stock alarm won't go on. so you have to sit there anyways. defeating the purpose of it. just leave the key in for another 20 secs. I just leave my key in for 30 secs. take them out and hit power on the timmer right after so It's not even used.

however it does have it's uses. like parking infront of the bank. taking the keys out and locking the door. going to the ATM. and comming back without having to restart a min later

my stock alarm is messed up anyways, well the drivers door switch is anyways, it thinks the door is always closed, so i cant arm my alarm unless the pass door is open.. so i never end up arming my alarm so i just let the turbo timer do its thing

What he said.

Turbos with water-cooled centers run much cooler than older ones without water cooling, so unless you're really stupid and shut down straight after hard driving, the turbo's temp at shut down is not high enough to "boil" the oil and leave carbon deposits, which older turbos could do.

Question: How does the stock alarm work on TII's? I've had no experience with mine.

I usually take it easy and stay off boost before arriving at my destination and let it time anywhere from 15-35 seconds.

my turbo timer ranges from 30 seconds to 5 minutes(racing and long drives). The alarm on my 7 gets activated when I lock my driver's side doorwhich locks my other door. I hear a beep and I close the door while holding the handle, and 30 seconds later I hear a second beep telling me the alarm is armed.

I have one, I am too lazy to sit there and count.

Plus, it trips people out when they see/ hear your car turn off when you are not in it.

Mine came w/ a greddy timer. I usually let it cool off for 30 sec. Spirited runs get p2, which is 1:30.

I thought about strapping an EGT probe to the turbo housing to tell me if it has cooled down.
