TURBO ON MY GXL... possible?
TURBO ON MY GXL... possible?
okay, i know this might sound like a dumb question but i got an 89 gxl, im gonna put a full exaust very soon (headers, and full piping)...can i buy a turbo kit and slap it on my gxl? or do i need to swap the motor for turbo....and in that case if i cant use force induction, will a bridgeport let my gxl see 14's in the 1/4 mile. ?

look at the Very top of this forum list, you will see threads like "N/a T2 conversion #2" and such, this is a guy that put a turbo on his n/a car, also do a search, you will find more stuff than you want to read
and for the turbo, you would be Better of selling your n/a and buying a T2, but if thats out of the question, do a complete swap of engine and drivetain wireing gauge cluster ect, do a search on that for more info too

Well, to your credit some explanation is in order.
This question is asked about two or three times a week.
The answer is "yes you can do it, anything is possible really." There are at least two or three people who are working on/have done/just finished the work involved. There USED to be a kit available because of the seemingly high interest in the idea, and it was very reasonably pricd too ($1500 if I remember right) but nobody bought it, since most people who want a turbo are just fantasizers or dreamers and not doers. The thing is, doers do not need a kit, they can do it themselves (which is why they ae "Doers") and that's why the kit is no longer available.
A "sticky" is a post that stays stuck to the top. Aaron Cake's swap (if not the most famous then certainly the most well-documented) is detailed in no less thn 4 stickies and a 5th post is up with video files of his now-running conversion. He fabricated practically everything himself and everything's detailed. If you can't fabricate, then maybe modifying cars isn't for you (not to be harsh but it's the truth - there is no such thing as a "bolt on")

CrackHeadMel: Nope, wasen't talking about you.
peejay: There's actually another thread around with a few pictures called "Final status of...."...It was never stickied because it didn't contain very much (though it did have some complete engine bay views). I'll bump it or something...

Right, forgot about that one
I still feel that, if you have to ask if it's possible, then it'd be cheaper and easier in the long run to just buy a T2 in the first place.
If you don't have to ask, then it's probably a tossup

FINE THEN, forget the turbo... sorry for asking. so then what about a bridgeport, would that be a significant move? how much hp might i gain from porting my gxl? what will it do 1/4 mile wise?

chill guys.. he's new to sevens.. asked the same question everyone and their mother asked.. he will learn in time how to use the search.. and how things work.. don't scare him away...
Turbo into an N/A is usually not worth the trouble as it would be cheaper and easier to purchased a TII to begin with...
As for the bridgeport.. .Never done it myself.. but I'm pretty sure you can see 14's quite easily if it's setup right...
don't quote me

a good bridge port on a 13b.. with a holley carb setup with full exhaust no cats.. sticky tires good clutch is good for high 13's.. i pulled a 13.8 on my 85 gsl 12A... half bridge ported... only on the high end... holley 600 racing beat intake.... no msd, stock 3.90 diff.. just some sticky hoosiers!! and a bronze clutch.. good luck... dont consider driving that bridge port everyday tho.. it gets aggravating thats i have my 91 na.... reliable as hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
i will be happy with mid to low 14's. thats all i ask of my gxl...yes it is my daily driver. its street/race. i am willing to spend a grand i guess thats all it should need. i just want to be in the range of mid to low 14's.

bridgeporting it is sort of like putting a big lumpy cam on a piston engine...
it's going to idle rougher.. and eat more gas... and the engine won't last as long as a rotary with stock ports... I would not suggest bridgeportig your daily driver seven....
Once again, I have never had a bridgeported engine, so I may be wrong.. no quoting me
I'm just bored at work hehe

If you're going ot have a shop do the work, you're looking at least $2-3K for removal, porting, assembly, installation.
Then you'd have a LOUD LOUD LOUD car that doesn't make big power until you get way up in the rev range. For that money & performance, you'd be better off selling your car and buying a Turbo II to mod. You'd get your 14's easily and still have a car that's very easy to live with on a daily basis.
If you're just looking for a streetable 14 second car, the NA FC is not the best place to start.
