That was caused by a leaky Pulsation Dampener (end piece of fuel rail)
You might want to replace it w/ a new one.
You can upgrade to a Series 5 (89-91) but you have to replace the entire fuel rail I think. So a new Series 4 (86-88) will do fine.
Is it flooded possibly?

Start scouring the net (right after you take off your caps lock ) for a new wiring harness, or do a search for the '88 FSM on this site (its completely free, beats paying money!) If you get the FSM, you could in theory after you get a new pulsation dampner, rewire all the ones that were burned out. Another worry is vacuum hoses. There are quite a few things around that area that are needed in order for the car to keep running, the FSM should give you a good idea of the wires in that area that could have been damaged.

As far as going faster, just do a search on this site for TII mods, you'll get plenty of info

Cliff notes: Get FSM, Rewire/new-used harness, search.

Take it easy,

Joe

If that were the case, it wouldn't fire then die. It wouldn't even start....(I know...)

I agree with Node, if theres a fire under the hood blame that damn PD. Mine dosent even leak, but since Im drivin 1500 miles to FL next month IM replacing it anyways. That thing scares me and my 7 to death..........

Here are my engine fire pics. The wiring was basically fuct! I dug it out and jerry rigged it so I could get another 10 K out of the motor. I bought a new harness for it when I did the rebuild and upgraded to a series 5 motor. 89-92 T2 motors are way better.

Click here to see some pics.

The engine fire happened on the left side of this pic. On the right side of the intake ports. I put the fire out with a 44 OZ of Mr. PIBB from 7-11. Not kidding either. I had no fire extinguisher at the time. I always have one on me now.

I don't think I ever got a definite answer.. Does the 89-91 TURBO fuel rail fit on the 86-88 TURBO? Does that 89-91 N/A fit on the 86-88 TURBO?
