Angry turbo

I am curious if my turbo is bad or not. What r some symptions of it? It sounds like a huge exhaust leak right now. The exhaust shop couldnt find any leaks...he thinks the turbo is bad or the manifold is cracked so I will be taking that apart soon to find out if it is cracked or what. How would I be able to tell if it is bad or not? Some information would be awesome thanks.

What do you mean? Just take off the large hosing on the turbo intake side and check the blades. Or check if there is any play on the shaft. Does it turn smoothly?

Let us know...

Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge? Does your car smoke heavily?

I just took off the TID and stuck my finger in there. It spins freely. The exhaust shop said my manifold is either cracked or my turbo is gone. So maybe my manifold is bad or something. But we will see once I take it completly off.

The buyer I bought this from also mentioned that this needs to be replaced.

http://www.mazdatrix.com/e6.htm Letter G gasket. The manifold to the turbo.

So we will be doing that...thats going to be a pain to get to also.

But also... I dont know what happened, But when the exhaust guy used the torch to take off the heatshield...I think he melted a hose or something right above the exhaust manifold. It leaks coolant there now...Is there a hose or something there that has coolant? Or maybe a gasket melted or something there?

aha ya ;o

Is there some kind of coolant hose right there above the turbo area? It leaks on the manifold that hooks up to the downpipe... That is a manifold right? It comes off from right above that...its tough to see right now, I am going to be taking everything off soon.

I figured If I need to get in there to replace the gasket, I mine as well clean the BAC valve well im taking stuff off ...have my injectors cleaned and such..maybe even change all the vac lines too well im at it or remove them.

But I hope its nothing serious and its basicly only that gasket that needs to be replaced...adn teh coolant is just from a hose or something =/

This is why you dont let monkeys work on your car. Yeah theres a coolant line. Theres ont below the turbo and a hose in front on the left side. If he was ******* around in there using a torch to cut a heatshield off which is 1 millionth inches thick he must of cut the lower collant line possibly. Man that bullshit id go back there and tear those jerks a new ******* and make them pay for that.
Your problem could be as simple as needing a new turbo to mani gasket. But it seems more like it just needs a manifold. What could have happened is that the gasjet blew out and the heat was escaping from the gap then it cracked your manifold. Dude its not a big deal just take your turbo off and get another mani on ebay there like 150 or so. Hopefully thats all it is and thats what it sounds like to me. Goodluck.

Alright I hope so. Is there an easy way to remove that **** with it in the car still? Its a pretty tight fit in there. I was planning to just remove the intercooler and throttlebody and intake stuff...but then I suppose I would have to get new gaskets for that. Any ideas?

Removing the turbo is a major pain in the ***. I believe aaroncake has a write up on it somewhere. I might be mistaken. You will probably end up braking the heatshields off when removing it and you should replace all of the turbo related gaskets while you have it off. Good luck.

Unhappy

I have no idea how I am going to get this intake manifold off to get to the turbo and the turbo housing =/

Anyone know where that write up is that he said there might be? Or care to let some light in on this and tell me whats up? =[

I was kind of surprised how easy the throttlebody and dynamic chamber came off... I thought it would stick together but it just slipped off with ease.

Still stuck on how I am going to get these removed =/

Well I am done for the night. However If some of you remember me or dougster talking about no reverse. I ordered new boots and shims. So I decided I would take out the shifter and take a look. Well alot of the boot was tore up, but when I took the shifter out I noticed there wasnt any greese inside =/. It is just kind of full of dirt stuck to the side. Might be a good reason why it shifts rough. Anything I can use to clean it up a bit? Or should I just add greese to it.

I have this gasket brand new still in wrapping. I bought it from Mazdatrix when I ported my wastegate but then I ended up upgrading to an S5 turbo so I did not need it. I can sell it to you for 30 dollars including shipping. That is a lot less than you will pay at Mazdatrix (when you take shipping into account and stuff).

Let me know.

Find the FSM, in there are detailed instructions on turbo removal, and intake manifold removal, and just about anything else you need to do (remove acv valve). Pictures and all, very useful.

Dan

P.S. The turbo isn't that bad to take off, only the first time.

If you need to know how to take off the turbo look it up in a service book. Dont assume what you have to take off. THe FSM can also be downloaded for free at www.fc3s.org
There no need to take off teh intake manifold. And just to save you some time the best way to remove the turbo is to drain your antifreez and take off the LOWER coolant line comming from the rad. Then you slip the turbo and mani out through the top of the car. With that large hose outa the way itll be a lot simpler. But please refer to at least a hanes on the proper way to removing the turbo.

Alright I will check that stuff out. I have the haynes and havnt seen any turbo removal section but I will look through it a bit better.

And What do you all use to cap off your vac lines? And what do you all use for fuel lines.... one of my lines look like they could just blow any second.

and I wont be able to get under the car for a few days to remove the exhaust, so maybe i can get it from above but i doubt it =/
