Trying to remove Auto tranny - how to get torque converter mounting bolts off
On the car I'm parting out, I can't remove the engine with the tranny still atached, so I'm trying to get it off. I drained the ATF (which is a PITA and messy) and now I need to remove the nuts that hold the driveplate to the torque converter. I can get to them fine, but how do you stop the driveplate from moving?
If you have enough stuff of the front of the engine you can pull the torque converter off the input shaft splines by pulling the motor forward as you remove it. Worry about getting it off the torque plate later. It's what I had to do when my motor wouldn't turn(locked up from pieces of apex seals).

Well, there really isn't any room to move it forward at all. The frame is just touching the fan assembly. Do you think I could unbolt the tranny and slide it backwards?
I'm sure you could go the route of removing the trans first. You'll have to decide if it's easier to remove the trans or the stuff in front of the engine.
Or you could possibly hold the engine with a breaker bar on the front pulley bolt. Or use a large screwdriver in the ring gear teeth.

Well, the problem is that there isn't enough room to get to the front pulley nut. I guess I can just put the tranny in park and put on the e-brake.
When I dropped the tranny, I took the torque converter off first. This was painstaking as it seemed to take forever. I used a flathead screwdriver and a closed-ended wrench. Put the scredriver into one of the teeth on the flexplate and the wrench on the bolt. The wrench won't break the bolt free its threads, but will turn the engine until the screwdriver is flush against the bell housing. Now the engine won't move because the screwdriver is holding i in place. Get your muscle on and crank at the wrench, eventually the torque conver bolts will come free. I ended up striping one of the bolts before ever getting it off. I had to drill through the head and tick a rod of cold-hardened steal through the hole and use it like a t-handle.
Goodluck. Find some PB breaker, it will greatly reduce the amount of torque needed to break the bolts free.

I'm actually starting to think I might be able to just lift it out as is and not remove the tranny. I'm not even sure if there's enough room to move the tranny back to disengage if from the input spline. It looks like theres only an inch or two of room. Unfortunately the guy across the street is using his engine hoist right now so I'm gonna have to rent one. Not to mention the fact that I don't even have a vehicle to get it out here with.

there are 4 bolts on the converter you ahge to spin the converter to reach all four, then you have to remove the driveshaft and slide the tranny backwards. the car needs to be lifted pretty high and you will probably spill a bit of leftover fluid in the process. my auto tranny was trashed so we just let that bitch drop haha. good luck with it.

Yeah, I know about all the bolts, I just had a problem with the driveplate wanting to spin. I think I know how to do it now, though. I honestly don't know if the tranny is any good or not. It worked fine before the wreck, so it should be fine. I'm pretty sure its good, but not sure enough to make someone go through installing it only to find out its bad. I'm gonna see if I can just trade it for some stuff at a junkyard. That or sell it as is for cheap.
it shouldnt be that hard to get loose.do happen to have an air compressor and decent impact? if not then get a large rachet on the lower puller center bolt(this will keep the motor from turning over),then you can use a regular 3/8 rachet on the convertor bolt.

Well, its actually called PB Blaster. Its just a silicon spray that helps break up rust and loosten stuck bolts and nuts. You can get it for cheap at any auto parts store.
