Trying to ID a TII tranny.

I picked up a TII tranny yesterday, first one I've had now, but the guy didnt know if it was from an S4 or S5. It was a part pulled from a guy's son who owned an RX-7 six or seven years ago and was sitting in his garage. So, what's the best way to physically ID the differences? I tried to search but could not find exactly what I was looking for.

The number of veins on the transmission case will tell you. Post a picture of it and I can tell you in 2 seconds.

I thought he meant "veins", like the ribs on the transmission casing.

I'd like to see you guys ID one of those "smooth case" turbo trannys.

Who cares...
As long it has the 1" x 23 input shaft, you're good to go.
If you really insist on ID'ing the trans, just spin the input shaft and count the # of rotations on the opposite side when shifted into 5th gear...

Heh, true. Though really, the odds of someone actually getting one of those is pretty slim.

I would assume you could tell from the mount. I believe an S4 mount won't fit on an S5, and likewise the other way. So if your old one is an S4, see if it fits on the new tranny. If it does, then it's an S4, if it doesn't it's an S5.
