can't you make your own? I have seen similar braces on other cars and I am wondering how hard it would really be to try and make your own braces.

yea but it is a good bit of time too fabricate stuff like that and then you have the research and design... so its really not that unreasonable and it looks well built.

Get a real roll cage.
All those bolt on parts don't even come close to what a real cage does.

It didn't look like a feat of engineering sophistication to me, but why rock the boat?

It's a marketing marvel more than an engineering marvel to me but I'm sure that a cage and all the underbody bracing will make the already stiff FC even more solid.

My question is: Is it possible to stiffen up your chassis TOO MUCH? As with anything in life, you CAN overdo it but would it be a detrimental thing to handling?

Just depends on how you like your car to handle. If you like the go-kart feel then you'll be served.

yeah cork sports is nice, well designed. if you febed up ure own (which would be easy to do) but it would not distribute the forces corecty if you just slaped it low on the body rails VS the CS bar that is against the rails rather then bolted to the bottem of them. and you would have to have 100% 45 degree angels to distribute the forces equaly. so you could fab up ure own and it prolly would work ok but its not going to be as good nor as good for your car as the cork sport one.

Structural engineers design buildings, bridges, etc. Maybe they had a chassis engineer look at it, or maybe (more likely) they just built a brace that connects four easily reached points.

It's designed and made by AutoExe in Japan, not Corksport.

Who said anything about bolting to the underside of the chassis rail? Who said anything about doing it any way other than the way they have?

so you could fab up ure own and it prolly would work ok but its not going to be as good nor as good for your car as the cork sport one.
I think you're overestimating the complexity of the brace. Anybody with decent mechanical skills, metal working tools and a welder could replicate it, and it would work just as well. And I'm sure it could be (pointlessly) painted bright red to look just as "good".

not that hard to buil at all. mocked it up, tack welded it, then threw it on a bench and welded it all together. mine bolts in the same way on the control arms, but the i have it bolted through the side of the frame rails. mine cost about $450 less too.

I don't know what you consider stiff, but FCs are flexy fliers...
Put some power through em and you can hear and feel the chassis flex under power...

Or put the front up on a jack and open and close the doors and you can hear them scrape. The FC is the only sports car that that has ever done that to me. The FB and FD sure doesn't do that.

well, I think what you mean by power is 400, 500+ hp right? There IS a minority whose goals are to reach those number, but those that remain in the 300-350hp range woun'd really worry about that, right? I never felt any chassis flex, even when taking a steep driveway at an angle.

The FC is MUCH stiffer BY DESIGN than the FB and of course the FD will be a much better designed car so perhaps there is something wrong with yours? perhaps a previous accident that tweaked the frame? I just honestly don't think the FB will be STIFFER than an FC when MAZDA specifically sought to improve, AND DID, over the SA/FB.
