Trying To Begin Bodywork & Bolts Are Breaking!

Earlier today I was going to take my rear bumper off to do some bodywork on the rear. I took off the clips then started taking off the bolts under the bumper... the first one busted after a few turns. I then went to the opposite side and tried to take that bolt out because it didn't look as rusty as the other one. It busted too! I was about to cry lol... then I figured there might be something I can do so I came inside. What the hell am I supposed to do now? Is there anything I can do to get what's left in the bolt hole out? TIA!

Spray pb, or wd, or any rust dissolver, then try to tighten a bit first. Then, when backing the nuts off, if it gets tight, go opposite direction, spray some more, and repeat. Takes a while sometimes, but rust is a killer on bolts.

Soak them often, soak them multiple times. If there rusty, soak them over a several day period.

I just so happen to have a can of that stuff.

How can I start tearing down my car when the bolts are busting though.

Is there some tool that can take the rest of the bolt out on the ones that break?

Thanks guys, this **** sucks. I refuse to have this TII go to the junkyard!

Awesome man thanks that's the info I was looking for.

Now will that mess up the threading taking out the bolt?

I mean the parts are getting replaced anyways but I have some bolts that busted off else where that I would like to remove and put a new bolts in.

I second (or third? or fourth?) PB Blaster. Since I started using it about 5 years ago, I have broken exactly ONE bolt.

Follow the directions on the can. Shake it up, soak the fastener, then let it sit. Soak it again and then hit the fastener a few times with a hammer if you can to shock the threads and help open up little areas the PB Blaster can creep into. Try to tighten the fastener a little, then loosen it. It is important to apply STEADY torque as sharp blows can break things easily.

If you have impact tools available, they are really handy about now.

Also, heat works wonders. Heating the head of a bolt to cherry red will almost guarantee it will come out easily. Of course this is not always possible...

In general, EasyOuts don't work. And what's worse is that they often break off so now you not only have to drill out a bolt, but you have to somehow drill through a high-tungston EasyOut...

Drill it out. Grind it flat, then center punch. Start with a small drill bit and go slow with lots of lubrication (good advice for any situation). Then work up progressivly in drill bit size until you get to the appropriate size so the hole can be retapped.

Sometimes re-tapping is the only solution, I've had to do that on several spots.

Yes... a buddy of mine and I had to do some terrible things to the swaybar mount on his 911 when that happened.
