Trying to assemble a hybrid turbo, but

I finally got the whole broken CHRA thing sorted out. Turns out, this turbo is a TO4B hybrid (possibly bnr or something). The chra was busted, and it fell apart when I tried to index the turbine side. Then, turns out it had a 360° bearing instead of a 270° thrust bearing. So after getting the NEW CHRA machined out to accept THAT, I've been trying to put it back together.

I just can't get the damn shaft all the way in. That doesn't sound right.

Anyone ever have this problem? It's the seal ring on the turbine side. I just can't figure out how to get it all the way in the center housing. Anyone got any good tips?

did you try putting grease on the seal and where it slides into the chra?

I used oil at first, but grease didn't work either. Anything else work?

Horrible idea. I'm looking for something more realistic.

So you're basically making the equivalent to a BNR hybrid? how much has this run you? I'm interested in doing it myself.

I have rebuilt a couple stock and bnr turbos. I had the same problem at first. That ring that they supply in the rebuild kits to me is too big. I used the old ring, tap on it with a rubber mallet and it goes in. Never had any problems since then. Put the turbine end on some wood and just use push down as hard as you can on the chra.
Maybe you tried that already though.

maybe take some vise grips and carefully close the oil seal and let it sit overnight? maybe it got too stretched out when you put it over the shaft

Excellent ideas. I'll give them a shot. Been really busy lately, but I think I can squeeze a little car time in

If you're talking about the metal piston ring that goes on the turbine side it should fit just like a piston ring in an engine does. Colapse it with your fingers and see if it fits into the bore on the chra. If the ends are pushed together and it won't fit you have the wrong piston ring. It should go in firmly but not forced, there should actually be a small end gap with it in the bore.

I'm pretty sure it's the right one. It did come out of the turbo after all. I'm not using a new rebuild kit or anything, since it didn't have shaft play or leak oil. I guess I'll try to find something skinnier to compress that ring.

Got it finally. I've been... away for a while.

Turns out that there was a bushing inside that will go in backwards. It's all part of that 360 bearing thing. Once it came apart it was pretty much apparent that I was retarded. It went together so easily once it was properly assembled.

So what did I do wrong if the turbine wheel rubs the housing? I pulled the compressor housing off and it still rubs, loosened the nuts on the turbine housing and the rubbing goes away. It's only when I torque them down is when it starts to rub.
