Okay, I did a search of the forum, but didn't really find any post directly related to what I'm trying to troubleshoot. Recently I started to intermittently see the check engine light flash on and off. Thinking that it was just a vacuum leak causing the problem, I went through and changed all the vacuum lines (some of them are a real PIA!).

After doing that, the car ran great for a week, no check engine light, but then suddenly I started getting a check engine light on solid at 3000 RPM and the engine would start to sputter. Yet if I shifted down so that I went into a higher RPM everything seems to be okay...the check engine light stayed on, but at the higher RPM the engine didn't seem to stutter.

If I let the RPM come back down to idle then the light goes off and the engine runs fine for a few moments at 3000RPM until the check engine light comes back on.

I tried pulling the ECU codes, but got nothing...while trying to pull the ECU, the Check Engine light would come on, go off, then come on, but nothing else. I tried resetting the ECU, but that didn't help either

So looking for some troubleshooting ideas to maybe start with?

This is an 89.5 GTU BTW. I bought this car 20 years ago brand new and I remember people gave me crap about the quality of RX-7's & rotaries sucking...I now have to agree, 20 years later and I'm dealing with my first annoying problem ...LOL!

 

hmm. not really familiar with the s5's.. hang in there someone will be able to help
