Trouble shooting an overheating problem

I have an AE. I've searched and read as much as I can about trouble shooting overheating problems. The air pump was removed just before this overheating presented itself. That removed one of the belts so that the only one left is the alternator/water pump one. There was a reference made to a double belt fix but no explanation.

We auto-x the car and I'm thinking that with only one belt, we are getting slippage on sudden hard acceleration. We were letting the car run with the hood open in between our runs. After 6 or so runs the coolant starts to gurgle and flows into the overflow tank (and then overflows that). It does pull back into the engine/cooling system though.

What is the double belt fix?

The dual belt mod is for the alternator. You swap the pulley out for a pulley with two channels instead of one and two belts going around the e-shaft, waterpump, and alternator.

Looking at your sig I see a lot of mods, but not a lot of cooling mods. That might be something to look into.

At the risk of telling you something you already know i'd check the thermostat and make sure it's working. Then when the car is hot gently touch the radiator hoses and see if they're both hot. If one is cold the radiator may be clogged. Lastly, check and make sure your waterpump is functioning right.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was trying to figure out where the double belt would go.

Already swapped out thermostat with Mazda 180 degree one. Flushed radiator. Installed new Mazda 0.9 caps (radiator and filler neck near thermostat).

We have an Rtek 2.0 ECU upgrade so we can see (on our Palm PDA) when the coolant temp. hits 180 degrees. The thermostat opens and we feel the top radiator hose getting hot.

I am going to check the fan clutch and look into the double belt mod.

The other mods have been there for a long time. The overheating seemed to come after all of the emission stuff was removed (and blocked off), including the air pump (which removed one of the water pump belts).
