Question Transmisson Bearings

I have a 86 NA 5-speed whos transmission is starting to make some noise. It is loudest when it is cold in neutral at idle. All the gears work fine. I think it is the bearings. About what would it cost the have them replaced. The transmission places wont give me an estimate until they crack open the tranny. With 127,000 miles on it im not sure if its worth doing a major overhaul on the transmission. Thanks for your input.

First, top off the gear oil in the tranny.
If that doesn't work, purchase a used one.

PM =private message, click on user control panel and you can't miss it.

Remember, the bearings and seals are not proprietary Mazda parts. Any large inventory bearing supply house will have them at less than Mazda charges.

It is possible to rebuild the tranny without the special tools Mazda shows if you have a good selection of hand tools. It is up to you to improvise.

I rebuilt my tranny including replacing the first gear synchro for less than 50 bucks in parts.

Thank Heaven for Hylomar.

Try putting Redline MT90 in the tranny - that stuff does wonders. Either that or Royal Purple's gear oil. I've seen noisy trannies shut up with some good synthetic gear oil.

bearings... man does it make a chirp or skreetching noise cause its sounds big time like a throwout bearing that cost 25 bucks new from any part store.
. It is loudest when it is cold in neutral at idle.
that is the main reason it sounds like a t/o bearing cause when the car warms up or as it starts rolling and shifting it tends to quiet back down... Also thats pretty cool that you went to the transmission place and they didnt rip you it was mainly they didnt want to take out the transmission for nothing...

Thanks for all the replies. I do not think that it is the throw out bearing (my first suspicion) as the noise stops when I step on the clutch. I am going to change the gear oil tomarrow and see if that quiets things down any.

Do a quick search- there are a couple of links given for rebuild kits in some of the past threads on this topic...
