Transmission whine during decel in gear

My car makes a weird whining noise...almost like rubbing...like "whine..whine..whine..whine" when I brake and have the transmission in gear. If i brake and put it in neutral there is no noise. The repetition of the whine varies with speed.

I don't know if this helps but I bought the 87 TII from a guy who like to drag. It been a long time since I talked to him but I think he said he replaced the 5th gear with a different one to make it faster/stronger....? I don't know what he meant but there is fresh RTV around the tail of the tranny.

What could be making this noise and how do I fix it?

TIA

Is there any gear oil in the trans??? I bought this one FC that had a transmission whine and it turned out that there was little to no gear oil inside.

It also might be the diff, is it different in different gears? It's due to wear on the gears usually. If it's not too loud it's probably not a big deal, I've had a small whine in my 5th for a couple years now with no problems, just keep an ear out for it so you notice if it starts getting worse all of a sudden.

sounds alittle like one of the bearings. Maybe the output shaft?

Having similar problems. Was told it was the bearings in the drive shaft.

Alot of times, some extra harmless play in the transmission will cause this. I had my transmission completly rebuilt by pineapple racing (whom have done MANY of these) and had similar noises.

He basically said as these things get old they develop more play or backlash in the gears etc. So even if all the bearings are good or even new and there is plenty of oil they become more noisy over time. He tells me even for hard use it is nothing to worry about.

And in fact race transmissions are SET UP this way to improve oiling and cooling of the gears and bearings.

But of course it never hurts to drain and refill with fresh gear lube, and redline or royal purple do wonders in these transmissions.

i would drain your fluids and check to see if there is anything metallic floating in it aswell.

The noise is the same regardless of what gear I'm in when I decelerate. It varies with speed. The faster I'm going when I slow down the faster the whine repeats.

Alright, thanks for the ideas. Things to check:

- fluid level (& metal on plug)
- output shaft bearing

What bearings? Do you mean play in the u-joints?
