transmission trouble (vibration, clinking)
Car: 88 GXL
Ok, so a couple weeks ago I had my tranny start going bad so I get a rebuilt one. Before I put it in I was having troubles with vibration at highway speed (65+) where it would vibrate in gear and out but if I let the clutch barely connect then disconnect it would get rid of the vibration.
All I did was remove the old transmission and put the new one in. I did add a small piece of rubber in the mount. The rubber on the small round plate in the middle of the saddle mount was almost all gone so I sliced it off and put a rubber piece in it's place. It's pretty hard rubber but fits in place VERY nicely. The other thing is that before AND after the swap my shifter is slightly out of place. It's like the end of the tranny is slid towards the passenger side about an inch.
Now, there are two vibrations, one is in sync with the engine speed, this confuses me since the only thing I touched was the tranny. The second is similar to before but now it's very apparent at much lower speeds.
IN ADDITION: This was occuring before and after the swap. When shifting gears (in motion) there is a loud clunking. It sounds like it's dry shifting but I made sure to fill the fluid before I started her up. Also, it happens sometimes when I just push the clutch pedal down or let it up.
The engine related noise sounds like it's out of balance. Could this be due to the tranny being mounted slightly askew? There were never any weights on my drive shaft and I have had it off before. The engine was doing something similar last time I replaced the tranny but it seemed to go away after just a few minutes of idling.
ANY IDEAS? Sorry it's long, just wanted to get all info in.

If you changed 1 tranny mount bushing and not the other, this could cause the problem where you say the stick isn't centered.
When you changed the tranny, did you change the release bearing and pilot bearing? That is something that should be done when ever the tranny is out. The bearings are that expensive and they aren't that difficult to replace. Also, did you inspect the fingers on the pressure plate?
A vibration that is consistent with engine speed could be the tranny input shaft bearings. I don't know the condition of the transmission you used to replace the old one, so its just speculation.
