Transmission trouble
I bought an 86 GXL two weeks ago, and the transmission seems to be slipping. I push the gas peddle and it engages late and ruff. Does someone know what it could be.

actually, I'm pretty sure there's a difference between S4 and S5 N/A tranny's as well. I remember somebody saying the S5's were built a little stronger. But, other than that, they should bolt right up. The 5th gear ratio is different from S4 to S5 as well.. Check mazdatrix.
I have a working auto tranny I'd sell ya if you were in Oregon/Washington

I just swapped an s5 manual tranny into my s4 n/a after it blew. This was mainly because I had an s5 tranny locally available, not because I felt it would be an upgrade. The n/a trannies are all in the same class of transmissions that Mazda makes, along with the miata boxes. The T2/FD trannies are of a beefier style that is also found in some Mazda and ford trucks and SUV's (like my friend's 94 explorer).
If you look at sticky about the options, you will see that the s5 has a slightly taller 5th gear. As far as intalling it, it's almost the exact same, except the tranny crossmember is different. If you get an s5 n/a transmission, you need to make sure the transmission includes the crossmember. You should also purchase a new tailshaft seal to make sure it doesn't leak. You can get that from the dealer or Mazdatrix.
I wouldn't attempt a 5 speed conversion unless you are willing to put the car down for many weeks...
