Transmission report

I just bought a 86' and on the way home my clutch.. well... explodes (gotta love it). So I'm in the process of getting to it to replace it, and I go to drain my transmission fluid. I unscrew the cap and I would say at most a cup of black goop slowly drains out. I almost wanted to puke. It's my guess that no one had ever replaced the fluid.

I drop my transmissoin and look inside the end. Everything is coated in a layer of black (what can only be described as) tar. Now I'm not an expert, but that ain't good .

I cleaned that crap out, but I'm wondering what would be good to clean out the rest of my transmission. I'm not going to open it up completely due to the fact that I would end up breaking something and have to get a new one. Any ideas?

Btw, I LOVE Citrosolv.

It looks like the previous owner was trying to quiet down noisy bearings.

I'd use mineral spirits to flush it, then fill it with synthetic gear oil.

Definately on the synthetic.

I'll look into the mineral spirits thing. Any other suggestions?
