Transmission removal possible short cut

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to disassembling the transmission on the car?
I was thinking of possibly leaving the trans bell housing bolted to the motor and just removing the guts for servicing.
The reason I'm asking is because I lifted the rear end and placed it on jack stands. It looks impossible to get in there and remove the trans in one piece.
Has anybody attempted this, will it work?

thats a weird way of taking it out lol
I dont know if its even possible because isnt the bolts for the bellhousing to trans inside the bellhousing?? Or is it on the outer surface?

Put all 4 corners on jackstands and its easy to remove the trans.
I took out my trans by myself, only took an hour including removing exhaust ect.

How on earth would that be a shortcut of any kind?

Thousands of people have never had an issue removing the transmission as a complete unit.

I would think that even if it were possible (I'm 99% sure it isn't), it would be more of a PITA because you would have limited visibility and limited access to all of the components, due to it being under the car. Taking the transmission out is dead simple, anyway.

Short cut for me anyway, I have to get in there and take it apart to replace the synchros.

On all fours, how high was your car of the ground?
It still has to be high enough to fit a person and a trans on top of you in order to bring it out by yourself, right?

Um..

You support the transmission with a jack. You disconnect the transmission, bolts, wires, drive shaft, slave cylinder. You pull the transmission back and lower the jack. Pull the jack and transmission out from under the car. Generally jack stands will put the car high enough for it to clear the under body.

There is a saying in Spanish that roughly translates:

A lazy man does twice the work.

There is a reason why tranny work is done the way it is................................

the NA trans does not have a bell housing. So that is completely out of the question.
the TII does though.
SUGGESTION:here..I posted Trans removal(Styx Style.haha!)
Get the front of the car and place the wheels on Ramps. Then place the rear on Jack stands(under the subframe). This will make the car nice and sturdy to get the trans out.
Handy HINT:.when replacing the transmission,Take off the belly pan,and put a block of wood under the Main pulley.,,using the Scissor jack, jack the engines front up a bit so that the engine Leans UP at the Front and Down towards the rear..Just watch that Nothing gets Pinched in between the firewall.(like hoses, vac lines or wires.)
This Little hint will allow the trans to slip back o like Butter..(it will also allow you get at the Top and side trans bolts from Under the car.).You may have to remove the Fan off the front of the waterpump pulley(4 10mm nuts) so it doesn;t hit the Fan shroud when the engine gets tilted.
..Ya gotta trust me on this info.,,I have done 6 maybe more tranny jobs..BY MYSELF,and it is getting to be Old habit.
disconnect the battery.
get wires off trans,(speedo cable disconnect)
take off starter.(make sure you put the Ground wire for the Harness Back on the LONG starter bolt when you Install the trans again).
loosen all bolts on trans..Leave one on at bottom right.
From IN the car take off the shifter surround and then take the 3 10mm bolts out of the shifter assembly.Pull straight up and the shifter will come out).
Undo the exhaust (At manifold..undo bolts at Y pipe).
take the 4 14mm nuts off the driveshaft.
POP the drriveshaft out and make sure you have RAGS when doing this or DRAIN the trans before hand.
put a Jack under the trans to support it.
Remove the 4 14mm bolts to the Trans Cross member..
Double check that everything is loose and OFF(like wires etc)
shake the trans, lower jack ..Take that Last 14 mm Bolt OUT.
The trans should come out and off now.
If a 51 year old Geezer with 3 dead vertebrae can Pop the trans out in a little over an hour, you should be able to do it too!
Good Luck..Cheers STYX.

from the rocker panel, it was about 14 inches above the ground. I had 4 jackstands and 2 small jacks to help me lol.
The transmission is light enough for one person to wiggle it off the engine and lay it on the ground, or slide it off your chest to the ground lol.
I am a big guy, my chest is 42 inches if I lay flat its 11 inches high. Some space left for moving about.
working on cars since I was 15, the experience will teach you how to do it more effeciently and not make you rage all the time lol.
Especially when nobody is available to help you.
When ever I need help nobody is available, but when they need help, I am always available haha.

had to go under there to take everything off tranny to pull engine and trans out at teh same time in 20F weather.... Theres enough space under there for me to go in sideways.

The only one I've heard of is to jack up the front of the engine so it tilts backwards slightly - though, that may only be making it possible to install..

installing it by yourself is a bitch
I had to crawl and get up, crawl and get up lol.

You can never have enough jackstands, and jacks. They will make anything requiring more then one person a one man job.
Once I get the input shaft into the pilot bearing, I support the trans with a jack and very slowly tighten the bellhousing bolts in a criss cross pattern. It will slowly inch its way in and mate with the engine.

Ok, you guys have made it clear. I raised the rear on a pair of ramps plus some 2x4 stubs. The front is raised to the maximum height of jack stands. Overall, the height of the car of the ground is approx. 20 inches.

Read my Thread reply Under Handy HINT.
raise the front of the engine by jacking it up on the main pulley.( to look like the engine is gonna fly out of the engine bay)
Front of engine up,rear down.(just don't crush any **** when you tilt the engine towards the firewall.)
it is tilted enough that you can work rather easily to slide the trans in from below and actually get at ALL bolts from the underside.

I'm following the hint you gave me, thanks for the info on the removal. I got the car jacked, exhaust removed. I also will be replacing the front diff mount as well.
Now off to removing trans mounting bolts and tilting the engine. Thanks again.

It is an easy job, especially if you have an NA tranny they are mega light, I don't consider myself to be strong and I pretty much bench pressed my transmission into my car last time I had it out.

Get 4 jack stands a good size jack and a competent buddy, and you will have it done in no time

Does the top of the linkage area need any lubricant besides the shifter bottom needing some axle grease?

No axle grease on the shifter. Since gear lube goes in the shifter hole anyways.
