Transmission Rebuild

Hello All,

After reading some old threads and talking to some fellow Rx-7 owners I have decided to rebuild my manual transmission (s4 n/a). The syncros have gotten to the point where only I can drive the car without grinding (although i still do from time to time).

Has anyone here actually done the rebuild themselves? Any tips for problems you ran into? I plan on buying another transmission and rebuilding it to cut out the down time for my car. Any tips on where to buy a kit?

Thanks

I don't know of any kits, and I've also been searching for parts to have at least Cryo'd on my next TII Tranny rebuild.

This is something I had thought about doing myself as well... There IS a kit out there... for the life of me I can't find the link to it. I think its like 200 or 300 bucks.

The problem you will come across is finding the right tools to do the job. There's some pretty specialized stuff from what I hear.

I just got another used tranny.

any luck on finding the transmission rebuild kit? I've got a TII tranny that has bad synchros on 2nd and 5th gear that i'd like to fix up. I've also got an S4 NA tranny that works great, no grinding or anything, but I doubt that parts are interchangable inside.

Unless you've done tranny rebuilds in the past, leave it to the pros. There's alot of tolereances to setup which when left to an un-supervised novice can lead to a re-do or even a re-do with additional parts replacements.

Most shops such as Wolf transmission, Action, and other chain-transmission shops can do a TII tranny (with passable/useable gears) with new syncro's for 800-1000 dollars. I've never gotten a quote for an N/A, but would suspect its less or in the ball park.
If the some of the actual gears are shot though, the price will rise as per the price of a new gear (unless you have extras...)

But if you do decide to do it yourself, make sure you take the time to PRINT out the sections of the FSM you'll need and keep them with you at al time while doing the build.

This is what I found but I do NOT have any references for this site. I would check into it more first.

on an na tranny there is a nut on the out put shaft that you need a special socket to take off, the socket must be 18 inches long , its a 41mm, is say it in the transmission part of the fsm, and other stuff about endplay tolerances ect has already been mentioned

Check Pineappleracing.com. They to tranny rebuilds, and help to support one of our own. No experience with this myself, but have always had good cust. service from them with parts ordering and talking about things with them.

I used neo synthetic fluid and it shifted smoother but did not help the synchros as I imagined it would not. The problem is that the syncros wear. I overfilled the tranny like a moron to and now I have a pin hair leak somewhere.

I am looking for a n/a tranny to buy with under 100K.

$200?
I'd be scared.
From the Mazda dealer, each synchro is going to cost close to $100 EACH.
I think 1 - 4 gears each have a synchro?
So the rebuild kit should be more like $500...?

I've seen rebuild kits for 250ish that included all seals, bearings and synros. Am I wrong?

Edit: see next post.

I had my tranny rebuilt at rx7world.com for $920. I have nothing at all to complain about and its really nice and tight. Couldnt be happier and it has a 1year warranty.
