transmission question

Hey guys, i just rebuilt my engine (89 gtu) and its still running a bit rough but its getting alot better every time i drive it. But now the trans is locking me out of every gear periodically for no apparent reason. about 90% of the time its fine, shifts smooth stays in gear no problems whatsoever, but then i started it this morning to go for a drive and it would not shift into any gear. I turned it off and went back out an hour later and it shifted fine when the engine was off, then i started it and it locked me out again. Then after letting it idle for a few mins it shifted into every gear fine and i drove it around for a good half hour with no problems. I havnt gotten under the car yet to check out if its just a linkage issue, but has anyone had this problem and is there an easy fix for it ? Thanks for any advice.

My shifter bushings had completely disintegrated into nothing and I was unable to shift into reverse and first gear 9 times out of 10. And if I was able to get it into gear, it would be very difficult to get it back out of again. Replacing my shifter bushings solved this. Are yours newer, or don't you know? Is the shifter very loose all 'round and in gear?

im not sure how new mine are. I bought the car a month ago with 117k miles on it but the tranny feels really solid all around so it might not be the original. Once in gear the shifter is pretty solid it doesnt have much freeplay and it comes back out of gear no problem. i guess ill have to get under there and check out the whole linkage assembly. hopefully its just a loose bolt somewhere throwing off the pattern.

no linkage on tranny. top load. sounds like a hydraulic issue. check you master and slave cylinder.

no linkage damn. the slave cylinder is topped off, i replaced it when i got the car and i just put a new clutch in as well. i have good pedal feel now and the clutch fully engages about halfway through the stroke so i dont think thats the problem. how do you get at the shifter bearings if theres no linkage ?
