OK i just got my 90 GTU back from getting the motor rebuilt and streetported. It's been fine for about 3 weeks then all of a sudden yesterday it started acting up. I can accelerate fine but when I let off the gas and put it in neutral and coast down to about 45 mph my car make this grinding noise from under the car(I think). It sounds almost like the drive sahft is rubbing against a heat sheild or something. It only happens when i'm going about 45 mph. Also when I start its kinds rough, the shift **** kinda jerks back and forth, like the whole trans is shifting. I got under the car and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Somebody please help!!!!

I would start by taking a look under the car to make sure nothing is coming in contact with all the rotating part of the drivetrain. That doesnt sound likely though or it would be happening all the time. If it was a tranny prolbem it wouldnt effect the way its starting. Are there any more details you can give us?

 

Not to sure how to explain it. The car has about 147,000 miles on it and its the original trans. I went to Don but he had some stuff to take care of and I haven't made it back out there. He said it might be a bearing or something inside the trans but he would have to ride in the car with me to know for sure. I just want to see if anybody has had any problems like this?

just a thought cause nobody has brought it up, what about yer tranny mounts? wonder how they are?

 

I think that they should be fine. Since the motor was rebuilt 2.5k ago, they got checked when it was out.

 

Could the exhaust being lose cause the transmission to seem like it shifts a little?

 

I would double check the trans mount if the lever is moving. IF the mounts are good then it is something inside the trans.

 

Is it only when you have the clutch pushed in? If so, your pilot bearing may have lost its grease and is eating itself up. Can ou "feel" this grinding in the stick? I doubt it though, since it only happens at 45 mph

Um... did they get the drive shaft on correctly? Could be bolted on bad, or misaligned?? Did they take it off for the engine swap?

 

hey kris, bring it over here.if you need a new tranny, i got a series 5, just gotta take it up to skool and fix it up...ive already done 3 tranny jobs...im a pro now !!

 

If they took the engine out they could have screwed the clutch up I have heard if you use the old one that came out if you don't bold it back up the way it was when you took it out that if will shutter but that is it also did you put a new clutch pressure plate throw out berring have the flywheel resurfaced any of these things
