Transmission mount questions

So today my dad and I decided to try and fix my trans mount without buying one. Got an old hockey puck out cut it in half n slipped it in where the bushing fell out of the crossmember. Now there's a huge vibration and a lot of sound coming from there, you can hear it noticeably from inside and around the shifter obviously. After the drive home I went down to gas station and we cut the puck in half of that half and had the guy put it back on. Now its like a quarter puck. It still has a vibration and is noisy but is better than with half of the puck in. So how can we fix this without the obvious solution of buying a new crossmember. I coulda swore I got the idea from this site lol. What are we missing? And no pics I can grab some tomorrow morning when we get back at it. Also to note before the way it was, there wasn't much of a vibration at all and no where as noisy.

I'm sorry, but you didn't fix it right the first time around, and now (pretty much) have the ***** to ask why it still isn't working right? Your joking right?

Yea Aprils fools! No dick not joking...My bad for not wanting to drop another $100 on the part. If it can't be fixed using the puck then just say so. Couldn't hurt to try is what we figured and Im sure were not the first people to try this. So thanks for all ur help dick.

I'm not sure why you expect help after name calling but people have used hockey pucks for motor mounts not trans mounts, Iduley makes a good point it's $100 part replace it the right way or come up with a better fix, maybe try a bump stop(firm but not as solid) if you're trying to fix it on the cheap, if it's making that much noise you may want to look at your square y-block mounts as well

Well I'm frustrated to nobodys fault but my own so I do apologize idle but thats all I'm trying to do is save a few dollars, hopefully tomorrow I can get it back on the lift and inspect it for myself and take some pics. I have one from a few months ago but it doesn't show the y block mounts. In the picture(old pic), if you start at the center crossmember mount theres a nut then washer then we put the puck slice if it makes any sense.

Still thinking about it lol, and reading my old thread I saw a response I hadn't seen. Shoulda started there but oh well. But Im pretty sure theres no cheap way out now if the y blocks are bad. And reading on the mazdatrix site I saw it says the crossmember grommet is not designed to carry weight which is what we created with that puck. So out the puck goes and I'll just have to put another couple hundred in her.

There has been a few threads over the years discussing this bushing you might be able to find a few other options, the "post" in the center of the crossmember is the base of the y-block, to each side of the Y there is another bushing(square) which is between the Y and crossmember, they are much sturdier than the center bushing but my have been compromised before or by using the puck if it's that loud

I get I came off dickish, and I'm sorry about that, but, the truth hurts. Nothing on these cars are cheap anymore, and doing something like that COULD turn out to be an even MORE expensive fix. But, I'm also a firm believe of, if your going to work on it once, make sure it gets done right the first time, cause I myself HATE having to tear something apart again because of that one stinking part

chill out guys, you won't be able to get off the shelf parts for these cars forever and there is nothing wrong with trying alternate fixes. plenty of parts on these cars require these types of repairs already.

the center round bushing needs to be soft as it takes the lateral load. the Y blocks carry the weight.

Thanks for all the replies, I definitely understand now that the grommet should be softer than a puck. What about some of the shifter grommets. They are pretty soft, I could get one out my other 7. I will end up getting the proper parts eventually but till I do guess it wont hurt to try.

Do you mean the shifter bushings(and spring)? If so that will help the feel/alignment of the shifter but should not do much with noise/road vibrations, but will help if the shifter is rattling around, if you're referring to the shifter cover(s) and insulation replacing these components will definitely help with sound and heat entering the cabin from the trans tunnel

What about a fill with windshield urethane? It's commonly used to beef up motor mounts.

you will have to experiment with different softness of rubber in that casting.

as stated above the Y blocks hold the transmission up, the center bushing just holds it side to side, so its pretty unimportant

I had a bad mount and shoved a piece of Heater hose in there..on the Spike of the mount.
Tightened it up with a small washer and the main washer to squish it in.

*I recall a Bushing, off another car..easily available through a parts store, that could be shoved in there and made to fit but you'd have to go through the threads in order to find it...it was like a sway bushing,or mount of some sort.

Maybe you could sandwich some puck slices in between washers on the middle bolt for the trans. I have it like that and car feels pretty good with no y blocks either

Ps.mysterstyx, your pic concerns me.....

The first gen uses some big rubber washers on it's cross member that might work. The big ones on the outside of this pic.

Not a bad idea, I have plenty of old hoses laying around that I could use. As of now we removed the puck. So we put the washer n bolt back on and looks like the picture again. But im gonna keep researching before I attack it again. The car drove pretty good with the puck gone just as before except now I have the kyb shocks n rb springs installed. Oh what a difference, my old shocks were all blown out. I could push down on them and the rod would just sit at the bottom lol. But after a few high speed runs I have a small vibration which could be that mount. Also havnt gotten around to the wheels bearings yet and still have the rear control arm bushings to replace. So its getting better making some progress and I appreciate all of you guys tryn to help keep my baby running. 😊

I responded to other thread as mentioned before and I will do so here. I have done this as well and after pressing out my old bad bushing, I pressed in a lower control arm bushing that is meant for a 80's camaro (thanks Kevin landers!). The only down side to this is that the new bushings inner diameter is a tad bit small so you must drill it out. After I replaced it, it centered the transmission and raised my shifter height and got rid of a lot of vibration. I still drive it without any vibration and that is including the poly urethane transmission bushings that go on both sides of the Y block. I think I paid 10 bucks for it from eBay (not to sure as I did this 3-4 years ago) The part number for said bushings are FB715.
