Question Transmission issues.... I need opinions. What to do?

ok before i begin im going to give you some background.... i have an 89 vert that i bought a year and a half ago with and auto... auto sucks so i decided to do the 5spd conversion with a ACT HD clutch, 11lb flywheel, and the 4.10 stock lsd. well i finally got the money to do the conversion and bought all the parts. i just got my car back a week and a half ago. love it with the 5spd. i got a used tranny that had issues.... 2nd and 3rd were ruff, but i didnt know that 1st was bad (no signs).

well last night i was driving around doing a little spirited driving. i was at a light and decided to start a little hard. nothing crazy just about a 3500 - 4000 drop. well aparently my car didnt want to do that and it started to lunge forward and i hear a big pop and my car stops moving. at first i thought it might be my differential, but after i got the car to the side of the road i found that all the gears were as the were before other then 1st.

now sorry for the long story, but now to the point.... i need opinions on what to do should i get the transmission rebuilt, get another transmission used from the same guy i got it before (he said if the tranny was bad i could get another free), or any other suggestions... now the pros and cons of each. to get it rebuilt i would have to drive on it starting in second and putting stress on clutch and motor till i get the money to get it rebuilt, but it would be working perfect when i get it back. if i get another used... i would have my car back on the road with 1st in about a week and it would be free, but i could get another bad tranny and go through this all again.

sorry this is so long, but WHAT SHOULD I DO? opinions are very welcome. thanks everyone for your help.

Well if you could get another trans for free go that route.

Sure it's not a clutch issue?

positive its not a clutch issue. i hear first gear tumbling inside the tranny and when i put it in first i just wont hit a gear. but the free tranny could be worse then this one. i dont know the condition of the free one.

thanks for the input.

It's really not that complicated, free is free! If that doesn't workout, you can buy a known good tranny from a forum member.

What drivetrain was used for you swap? N/A or Turbo, s4 or s5?

s4 and s5 trannies are similar

What's your budget? If you get it rebuilt by someone you trust, you'll probably never have to worry about it again. That's what I would do.

ok now i just found out today that apparently my tranny isnt rebuildable. now to a new question.

Im not sure if i was given an s4 or s5 transmission the first time. can one of them handle more power? is one of them going to be a better pick to hold up to the stress im giving it? any help would be a good thing. feel free to give me all info on transmissions that you have in your heads guys. even if it doesnt pertain to my particular situation. thanks.

i'm going to bet that the splines on the output shaft are completely sheered off. same EXACT thing happened to me, by exact i mean same RPM range too, 3500-4000 dump. only difference was i had the stock S4 flywheel. new tranny and RB aluminum flywheel now.
