transmission grinding

1986 GXL...new CM clutch, pp, t-bearing, p-bearing, shifter busings...shifting into 2nd and 3rd fast/hard results in grinding. 1st gear...doing say 5-10 mph and then push clutch in, here a brief grind from tranny. 2nd gear pulling to like 5k tranny makes a grind/whir noise. Transmission going to crap....i know the 2nd 3rd syncrhose must be crap. And almost always, when going into reverse, it will give a little grind. Also...today at stop light..i reved it to 1500 because i was listening for a sound i thought my motor was making, but turned out to be another car...and i pused in clutch and put in gear when revs were dropping for 1500...grind...that cant be normal...it shouldnt matter if you were at 6k and put clutch in and tried going into 1st or would?

Last...good idea to try and get my trans rebuit, or find a j-yarder......miata gears w/rebuild?

If you rev'd to 6k w/o pushing in the clutch, then pushed down clutch, and put it into gear, it would grind if you had suckass synchros.

I'd be checking the clutch master and slave, as well as using some redline MT90 in the tranny first before I started shopping for a new one.

Redline mt90 is the only thing I would recommend. They also make some stuff with lsd additive, guess where that goes?

Fix, no, help, yes. Red Line really helped my grinding. If I'm going hard enough I still get some clash going into second.

I'm kinda wondering how long it's supposed to last though. It was an amazing difference when I first put it in, Nov 01 or about 12k mi. ago, but at this point it seems to be deteriorating a little bit. It grinds just a tad easier than it did at first.

Cheers

Hey Marc! There is a shop in Fedral Way that carries Redline products. I searched all over this town for that stuff. Nice shop! Anyways, the fluid did nothing for my trans, in fact after a few months I switched back to a standard 80w-90 (actually helped more). It's certainly worth a try though. It is a little pricey. I'll talk to you later.

That's the first I've heard. Did you have synchro trouble?

Have you considered using Redline's Shockproof? It's a new Oil offered through Redline that Is more superior than MT-90. You shift gears like It was done effortlessly.

Weight? I'm not sure. 2.5 quarts should suffice. My mechanic and I were discussing this at one point and I went for It. I'll look Into the weight and reply back.

I, amoung others, would place Redline's MT 90 up there. But b'c Shockproof Is fairly new and It's properties are more advanced, my Mechanic holds this Oil In high regard and with my personal use I can lay claim that It did Improve my shifting to be more faster and the Oil didn't take as long to heat up allowing "notch free" shifting as compared to MT 90.

If my synchros are already going bad..I'm thinking the cost the the synthetic fluid wouldn't be worth it..don't think that its going to make my synchros "un-worn".

Still probably gonna try it though..
