Transmission or clutch problem 88 SE

On my way to getting my muffler exchanged my car started making a clanking sound and then the gears seized up and i cant drive it at all. When ever i give it gas the car wont move and you here a loud clanking sound. The transmission was making a winding sound for the past few weeks.

Anyone knwo if if its the clutch or transmission? The transmission place i took it to is going to have a look at it. But id like to know from someon that isnt going to try to screw me over in money. Im thinking the transmission went out. Am i right or wrong?

Some questions.
Does a gear seem to be selected, even when you're in neutral?
When you let out the clutch, does the engine stall?
Is there any clanking noise when you step down on the clutch & start the engine?

If you're lucky, it's just a broken U-joint.

The RX-7 clutch & tranny are no different than any other car, so the shop will be able to fix (or screw) you just as though you had a F150.

I think you may have miss read my question. I cant even get it in gear. The clutch pedal itself is fine. But when i give it gas the wheels (my case wheel) seizes up. And it wont go anywhere. Im thinking its the transmission BUT the guy at the trasnmission shop said it could be the clutch. Like i said earlyer i would like to go in knowing as much as i can about what the problem can be so i dont end up getting told some bs by the guy trying to fix it and be out more money then i have to.

RE: question 1
The transmission can have a gear selected (IE: 3rd) even when the stick is in neutral.
Then when you select 1st the driveline locks.

Maybe check with Shane at www.rotaryworks.com for price & availability of a used NA transmission.
Then you will have an option if the shop quotes a transmission rebuild.
