I have a whining noise coming from my transmission when idle and driving the only time the noise goes away is when I push the clutch in any advise on what it might be... The vehicle is a 1987 rx7 turbo II. Thanks.
Does it sound like this?:
Check the video at :38 seconds.
This is the release bearing or the throw out bearing. Mine does this sound too when idle and goes away if I press the clutch in. Car performs with no issues, but the sound bugs me. Unfortunately, the only way to get in and replace it is to drop the tranny.

Well, the T/O bearing along with the pilot bearing only come into play when the clutch pedal is depressed. If noise at idle, but stops when clutch depressed, the trans input shaft stops turning=trans problem/bearing.

It is most likely a bearing failure, if there is oil in the transmission. If it has leaked dry, that screaming will be the gear teeth on your input shaft melting (not pleasant). Bearing kits for these transmissions can be found on the internet with the same brand of bearings as the originals. I have been told to go with factory syncros, you can get those from mazda. It's a very simple transmission to work on. If you don't have the tools or want to be responsible for what happens to it, take it to a reputable transmission shop (if they'll actually touch it). I had to rebuild mine last year because no shop would touch it, even with the bearings and synchros already sourced.
