Trans tear down and maybe more...

Well, as many (if not all) of you may know by now, I have had some slightly troubling problems, most notibly the loss of 1st and 2nd gear while driving. So, as of tomorrow, I will be pulling and tearing down the transmission. I will be photo-documenting the whole thing right here. I think that alot of the people in this forum who read my previous post (tranny fun) about this incident will find this quite interesting, especially since they, like me, are looking to reasons why this happend. One of my friends suggested that I rounded off the gear, but stopped when I asked why I lost 2nd then. Nobody has been able to give me a good response, so I had to formulate my own.

All bets that I am making right now are on the 1-2 shift fork or roll pin that holds it. My theory is that the fork had a crack in it when I bought the car, and just didn't present itself until now. The crack finally got enough clearance that when I went to take off, it just seperated, jamming the car in the 1st gear position, but not in any gear. The trans just didn't seem like one that blew, especially since I drove it home in 3rd (damn, that 1.39:1 is REALLY TALL) and no problems presented themselves. If this is the case, then I will replace the shift fork and entirely rebuild the transmission. My target price is about $250 with a full rebuild. I can get high quality bearings from a source for cheap, as synchro rings for $10 each. The seals are a given, being that the rear seal leaked a little before hand. I am going to put in new shifter bushings, and finally, a Centerforce 2 clutch (I don't include this in the $250 goal, being that the clutch is that in itself). Do notice that this is not the dual friction clutch. I will also go for the RB lightend steel flywheel if mine needs replacing.

Guess thats it for now, anybody have any questions or comments, please let me know. I will probably post the initial pictures sunday morning, being that I am leaving to pull the trans at 6 am tomorrow and wont be home until about 10:30 tomorrow night.

I look forward to seeing what I did to break my car and what I have to do to fix it. See you all sunday!

EDIT: Also, anyone know where I can get straight cut gears for my trans if I did indeed eat a gear or two?

Well, only 8 views and no replies on the straight cut gear set. I saw a dog engagement setup for a 93-95 trans which would have been nice, but not for $8k.

Anyway, long story short, I went to put the car in the shop only to find that EVERYONE went up to road america this weekend with VSCDA (vintage sports car drivers association, in case you were wondering) without letting me know. To add insult to injury (even though I didn't feel that bad, being that I couldn't get up there anyway) they took the keys for a mustang parked in the only open bay that I was going to use. Anyway, I tried to move it, but failed miserably. So, I get to wait until monday until I can start work, and that will be after school until about 10pm, so I might get my trans out after pulling the exhaust. I am going to look at the cats (Bönez Dual Cat System) and see if they are clogged. If that is the case, I guess, even though it hurts me to do it, I will have to just gut them out (I can't belive I just said that, it feels so good...I mean bad, BAD! ). After that, I will pull the trans apart and take pics along the way, documenting the process in detail, as I said before.

Question time again!!! What is the break-in period on one of these transmissions, I.E. the time before I can switch over to synthetic gear lube. If you say that I can run synthetic from the moment that I rebuild the trans, just don't reply. Anyone who understands why I say that, please do reply.
