Tranny Troubles.....

let me try to explain this with as much sense as possible.....

im no expert with transmissions, i know a decent bit about rotories but transmissions in any vehicle is something im just stupid about.....so here goes

about a year ago i bought a 1990 mazda rx-7 5-speed that has only two real issues. it smokes alot ( i think water seal is blown), but worse it wont go into first nor second gear, third through fifth and reverse work fine. i dont know if there is any common problems amongst mazda missions that cause this. (searched found nothing) the only think i can think of is there is still some pieces of rubber jambed in the shifter from when the last owner changed the shifter and bushing ring "things". (he told me he changed it)

anyone know or ever had same problem or know better what problem is? how to fix?

Often times parts fall/disintegrate in the tail housing, especially 20 year old bushings. I've fished out huge chunks of plastic/metal from in there, but usually you can tell when you're pushing against something like that and when the linkage/gear is just screwed. Some people have had luck removing the tail housing and getting everything unbound (if it's not something that fell in), but at that point I rather just swap in a different one.
