Tranny Trouble!?!?!

I searched...

I just recently finished my first clutch job. Feels pretty good, but sounds like ***.

There is a whirring sound through all gears, and in fourth it gets worse and more scratchy.

I had to pull the tranny twice because in diagnosing the problem after the clutch was in the first time, I thought I damaged the pilot bearing. With a new bearing and seal in there, the problem didn't stop.

I don't think it is the tranny because of the fourth gear noise, but I'm somewhat new to this.

During reinstallation on the first try, I kindof forced the tranny in. Could I have done any damage to my engine??

S5 NA is the car. RB S/S Clutch and Pressure Plate W/ new T/O bearing as well.

Synthetic fluid in the tranny.

Also if anyone has a link to the fc3s page dealing with cold solder points on my cpu, Please post it.

haha, I "forced" my tranny in every time. JAmm it up in there, shake it around until it lines up with the engine. Only way to do it w/o a lift

Anyhow, are you 100% sure your pilot bearing is alright? It will make more noise when the clutch is depressed then when its not.

Yup, pilot bearing is fine. I got another tranny to put in. I'll see if that works.

I got it out of my 86 base, the driveshaft is bigger in that one so i"m gonna use that as well.

If it was your pilot bearing, it would only make the noise when you depress the clutch.

Sounds like your tranny is just low on fluid

Make sure it is topped off to the highest plug on the side of the transmission.

Does it feel like the clutch is slipping? Also I believe every clutch has a break in period, maybe this is just part of it.

You know, I just thought of something....

Do you have your starter hooked up right? Or is your silinoid disengaging?

I would pull that, or make sure you have the wires on correct, because it sounds like the bendix gear is staying engaged with the flywheel!

Nice avatar, cory. I don't know. I almost started to put in the tranny from my 86 and thought What a way to waiste a few hours if The t/o bearing I just installed is bad. I'm gonna order another one and see what happens.

on the starter Q, I'm pretty sure that the starter is fine. however, I may have hooked two of the tranny wires on backwards, the ones that simply plug into each other(closest to the toip of the tranny. I'm gonna change those in a minute and see what happens.

I also think I have a bad slave cylinder. It is new, but I don't think it is working properly(Maybe leaking). I'm also ordering another one of those.

I just got a new master cyl. , I'm gonna wait on the new slave to put them both in at the same time.

OK, when does the tranny make this noise?

Will it make the noise when it is out of gear, and you rev the engine? Does it also make it while it is in gear, clutch is depressed, or not? When?....

Also, it probably isn't because the starter is wired up wrong (if it is the starter....) Because if it's wired wrong, it won't work at all. But there is a silinoid that kicks the bendix gear out of the starter so that it engages to the flywheel. And it could not be pulling back in (a spring pulls it back I believe.) Maybe get under the car with a hammer, and give it a couple of love taps, see what it does. If that doesn't work, take it off, and take it to auto zone/advanced auto, they will test it for free.

I think your wasting your money on the clutch master cylinder/slave cylinder, those willl make NO noise...... The throw out bearing would only make noise when the clutch is depressed, and the pilot bearing would be the same.

If it does it at all times, I would be 100% sure that it's your starter not disengaging.

Could very well be wrong. But I'm assumeing the tranny worked fine before you pulled it to put the clutch in, and a little force on the input shaft won't make a difference.

Nice avatar, cory.

Thank you

It makes noise all the time. A pro mechanic at work told me to change the T/O bearing if I'm gonna pull the tranny again. But he likes to pretend he doesn't know anything about cars so he only has to do body work. I'll try the starter when I get back in town. Tomorow I'm going on vacation... Old roommates B-Day

I'm not changing the clutch hydraulics (spelling??) because of the noise, I'm just changing them because they are old.

SO probably no force issue, That is a big relief. Thanks, I'll post again aft er the weekend, I've got some drinking to do.

Noisy in all gears?
If you're standing still, in gear, with the wheels on the ground then the tranny is still - no gears are moving - only the T/O bearing & pilot bearing.

The pilot bearing only moves when the clutch is dissengaged, and the throw out bearing could be spinning, but it won't have any pressure on it (unless the clutch is depressed....).

Soooooooo.....
