Tranny showing signs of death?

Regrettibly my s4 tranny Is showing signs of terminal death. I do plan on getting a rebuild. Was their a difference with trannies within the S4's (excluding Turbo)? I have a GXL.

I have been told to replace some syncros with those of the GSL -LE (83-85). It supposibly allows better acceleration as opposed to the S4 Tranny? Although I am not sure what gears they are, It does sound enticing though. What would you do?

It sounds like you're getting some experienced advice, but before you pull it, what gear oil are you using?

Redline MT 90. It did Improve my shifting which was In the early stages of my terminating tranny. Especially the Infamous notchy 2nd gear that we experience In colder weather but It seems that Redline could not revive my dying Tranny.

If the bearings are quiet, a rebuild with syncros and rear seal should do it..

I word about the lock nuts on the main and countershaft. When you stake the collar, use a round nose punch. My 91 locknuts were hit with a square edged punch that cracked the collar. That allowed the lock tab to break out, allowing the nut to back up and jam 5th.

I had just learned that It Is the first 3 gears that should be swapped out In favour of the GSL LE ones. Can anybody confirm that?

I plan on doing that set up. So what? A little bit more money put towards a solid Tranny for my 7. It Is damn worth It

Sounds like you've never had a tranny apart before, in which case I would recommend you have someone else do it, or buy a used/rebuilt unit. Seriously, you'll open it up, look down and say "Oh ****". Lots of special tools required, and good luck getting the parts (Mazda will be NO help, and even if you know exactly what you want you'll get the wrong stuff). Also, it will probably cost as much to rebuild as it would be to buy a good used one.

That's what I said first time I rebuilt an auto tranny (it was a C4). In the end, I had messed up with a check ball placement in the valve body, causing no 2-3 shift, but I figured it all out.

Man, aaron, I'm surprised from that attitude from you. "If you've never done it before, don't do it yourself?" How is anybody supposed to ever learn about automotive work? I always do my own stuff, no matter how big or little it is, cheaper or more expensive, just to learn as much as I can.

Well If you must know, I don't plan on doing It myself. This one of those seldom times I will have It sent away to have It worked on. Normally nobody touches my car, I work on It myself. Right now I don't have the time or resources to "do It myself". Also, If I were more familiar with the Internals than I would confidently approach this myself.

rx-7fc/// thanks for the offer. When I find out more I'll PM you, If anything.

Reversing My car Is a bitch. I have trouble getting It Into gear due to really bad grinding and a real loud whinning sound coming directly from the Tranny In all gears.
