Hey, I recently (about 4 months ago) bought a 1986 GXL. I have never owned an RX7 before, but the car is in pretty good shape. It has 161xxx On the motor and transmission and the engine runs strong it has been taken care of but the tranny is a little loose when it comes to shifting. when i ease onto the gas I hear a rubbing type of noise sounds like the clutch when its being released and the transmission doesnt shift hard and is pretty sloppy going into 3rd. Also, there is a "clunking' noise when I let off the gas it sounds like something (I think the transmission but i have yet to take a look.) is loose and moving back and forth. Anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?


Other than that the car runs well starts good in the morning and runs good been driving it like this for a couple months. I will get pics soon.

 

Motor/tranny mounts. Shifter bushings. Get under the car and inspect. The guy that had my '86 GXL before me said he replaced the tranny mounts because it was acting all clunky like that.
