Every once in a while my NA tranny will be in neutral and stay to the left between 1st and 2nd, what causes this?

 

worn or stuck return spring in the shifter, or gummed up shifter itself.

More common on trannys where the shifter bushings are starting to fail or have failed.

Be careful or the return spring will break off an be gone forever.
